DMK MP Senthil Kumar expresses regret for north-south divide remark

DMK MP D N V Senthil Kumar on Wednesday expressed regret in the Lok Sabha over his controversial 'north-south divide' remark which had sparked a backlash. Kumar had on Tuesday used a pejorative to describe Hindi heartland states while attacking the ruling BJP. His comments led to ruckus and adjournment in the House, and were expunged by Speaker Om Birla later. MPs from the ruling BJP created a ruckus over the issue on Wednesday, and the House witnessed a brief adjournment during the Question Hour over the issue. At 12 noon, when the House reassembled for the Zero Hour, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal raised the issue, and asked if DMK leader TR Baalu, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi agree with the comments. SC asks MP Raghav Chadha to tender unconditional apology to RS chairperson

The Supreme Court on Friday asked suspended AAP lawmaker Raghav Chadha to tender an unconditional apology to Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar on the select committee issue, and hoped that he would take a sympathetic view of the matter. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked Attorney General R Venkataramani to apprise it of the developments in the matter after the Diwali vacation. The CJI said the lawmaker will have to meet the Rajya Sabha chairperson to tender an unconditional apology on the issue. The vice president, in turn, may take a sympathetic view of the entire matter and take further steps in this regard. BJP MP acquitted in 2011 assault case, judge repeals lower court's verdict

A district court on Thursday acquitted BJP MP Ram Shankar Katheria in a 2011 case in which he was accused of violence, overturning the verdict of a lower court that had sentenced him to two years in jail. A two-year sentence could have led to the Etawah MPs disqualification from Parliament. The verdict of the Agra district judge's court comes three months after Katheria was held guilty by an MP/MLA court. The former Union minister was booked for thrashing staff members of Torrent Power Limited in Agra in 2011, when the state had a Bahujan Samaj Party government. On August 5, Special Magistrate MP/MLA Court Anuj held Katheria guilty of the charges and had imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Katheria said, I was sentenced to two years jail by a court in Agra. Indefinite suspension of MP has serious repercussions: SC on Chadha's plea

Indefinite suspension of an MP could have very serious repercussions for people's right to be represented by a person of their choice, the Supreme Court said on Monday, and asked whether the Privileges Committee of Parliament could order AAP lawmaker Raghav Chadha's suspension from the Rajya Sabha for an unspecified duration. The top court said the exclusion of a member of the opposition from the House just because of a perspective which may not be consistent with the viewpoint of the government is a serious issue. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said the only charge against Chadha was that he did not seek permission of some MPs before deciding to include them in a proposed select committee, and sought to know from Attorney General R Venkataramani if it could be considered an infraction warranting indefinite suspension. 107 MPs, MLAs & 480 candidates have hate speech cases against them: ADR

A total of 107 MPs and MLAs have hate speech cases against them and 480 candidates with such cases have contested elections in the last five years, according to poll rights body Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The ADR and National Election Watch (NEW) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all the incumbent MPs and MLAs, besides the unsuccessful candidates in the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls held in the country in the said period. The analysis reveals that many of the MPs and MLAs, who are designated lawmakers, have actually declared cases related to "hate speech" against themselves. The analysis is based on the affidavits submitted by the MPs and MLAs prior to the last election they contested. According to the analysis, 33 MPs have declared cases related to hate speech against themselves -- seven from Uttar Pradesh, four from Tamil Nadu, three each from Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana, two each from Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra and West Bengal and one each from Jharkha
