Odisha to hold int'l convention of millets, targets record ragi procurement

The Odisha government will host an international convention of millets on November 9 and 10, an official said on Thursday. The government has also set a target to procure 8 lakh quintal of ragi during the financial year 2023-24, the official said. The convention is being held to promote millet and its products and encourage the marketing and export of millet-based products, including measures to include the use of millet food in the public distribution system, ICDS, mid-day meals, hostels and others, he said. The convention is expected to help in linking millets with sports and incorporating millets in all sports hostels, engaging schools, hotels, hospitals, and celebrities in the use and promotion of millets, linking millets and green investments, re-exploring investments in the Odisha Millet Mission. Odisha has been awarded as the best-performing millet promotion state at the National Convention on Nutri Cereals in 2021 and as the best state for scaling up millet mission in 2022

Centre for second PLI scheme for processing millet-based foods: Official

The Centre is in the process of announcing a second round of production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for processing of millet-based foods in the country, secretary in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Anita Praveen said on Tuesday. She said that the scheme is in the approval stages and involves an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an ICC event here, Praveen said that in the first round of the PLI scheme which started last financial year, the quantum of assistance involved was Rs 800 crore. "The ministry had got applications from 30 units in the first phase and the scheme was fully subscribed. Now we plan to provide another round of PLI scheme involving an amount of Rs 1,000 crore and is in the approval stages", the food processing industries, secretary said. FMCG-maker Nestle India enters into millets-based Ready-to-Make category

FMCG maker Nestle India has entered into the millets-based Ready-to-Make (RTM) market by extending its nutrition brand a+ in the category. The company has introduced a+ masala millets containing bajra in the select market of NCR and online but has plans to expand it to other markets as it scales up, its Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan said on Thursday. The product has been developed under the guidance of the Indian Millet Institute of Millet Research, supporting the government initiative to promote millet as a more sustainable food option. "We felt that 'a+' has strong nutritional connotations and that is why we decided to launch the new product under this brand. This is being done under a public-private partnership with IIMR and is in line with the government's focus on millets. ITC with India Post launch postal stamp to promote awareness on millets

Conglomerate ITC on Tuesday in collaboration with the Department of Post released a special postal stamp to raise awareness on millets. MoD, FSSAI sign MoU to promote use of millets among armed forces personnel

The defence ministry and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have joined hands to promote use of millets and healthy eating practices among armed forces personnel, officials said on Thursday. An MoU was signed in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya here. The two Union ministers also unveiled a book "Healthy Recipes for Defence" to promote consumption of 'Shree Anna' (millets) and its health benefits, the defence wing of the PIB said in a statement. The MoU aims to promote use of millets and healthy eating practices among the armed forces personnel, and ensure availability of safe and nutritious food to them. Spread cultivation of millets in newer ares of Andhra Pradesh: Governor

Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer on Monday called for an action plan to ensure cultivation of millets is taken up in different parts of the state. The Governor made these remarks while presiding over the 55th convocation of Acharya N G Ranga Agicultural University (ANGRAU) at Bapatla. "The Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) of the United Nations has set a target to achieve food security, end hunger, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030," said the Governor in a press release shared by the Raj Bhavan.
