India emerged as consensus builder following its G20 presidency: Jaishankar

India emerged as a "friend" and "consensus builder" in the world following its successful G20 presidency, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday, describing it as a "notable period" in the country's diplomatic history. In an address at a book-launch ceremony, Jaishankar especially referred to New Delhi managing to produce a leaders' declaration at the G20 Summit in September last year, overcoming divisions over the Ukraine conflict. "We had a particularly exciting last 48 hours before we came to that consensus," he said in an oblique reference to the hectic negotiations that went on to bridge the differences over the text to describe the Ukraine conflict in the declaration. Budget 2024: External affairs ministry gets allocation of Rs 22,154 crore

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was on Thursday allocated a total of Rs 22,154 crore for the fiscal 2024-25 in the Union Budget as against last year's outlay of Rs 18,050 crore. In line with India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, the largest share of aid portfolio has been granted to Bhutan with an allocation of Rs 2,068 crore. The development outlay for the Himalayan nation in 2023-24 was Rs 2,400 crore. The allocation for Chabahar Port has also been maintained at Rs 100 crore, underlining India's focus on connectivity projects with Iran. The development assistance to the Maldives has been kept at Rs 600 crore as against last year's Rs 770 crore, according to budget papers. In continuation with India's special relationship with the people of Afghanistan, a budgetary aid of Rs 200 crore has been set aside for that country. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India's greater capability, its own interest and reputation today warrant that it actually help in difficult situations, in reference to the Indian Navy's deployment of warships in the Red Sea region to deal with attacks on merchant navy vessels. The Indian Navy has deployed 10 of its ships in the region, Jaishankar said responding to a question during an interaction with students at the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai. Fertiliser subsidy bill to fall up to 34 % to Rs 1.8 trillion this fiscal

The government's fertiliser subsidy bill is likely to decline 30-34 per cent to Rs 1.7-1.8 lakh crore this fiscal due to fall in global prices and lower imports of urea, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Wednesday. Asked about any adverse impact on imports due to problems in Red sea, the minister asserted "there is no shortage of fertilisers in the country". Addressing a press conference, chemicals and fertilizers minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that the urea imports are estimated at 40-50 lakh tonnes this fiscal, lower from around 75 lakh tonnes imported in the previous year, helped by higher domestic production and increased use of nano liquid urea. "Ministry of External Affairs is making necessary interventions and our Navy is giving protection to Indian cargo vessels," Mandaviya told reporters.
