Mizoram to soon notify rules for processing local grapes for wine making

The Mizoram government will soon notify rules for processing locally grown grapes to make wine in the state, a minister said. The state council of ministers had recently approved the draft rules. Replying to a question from VL Zaithanzama of Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), Excise Minister K Beichhua told the assembly on Tuesday that the draft rules have been sent to the law department for vetting and would be notified soon. Excise duty will be charged on the locally processed grape wine, he said. Manufacture and sale of wine from grapes grown outside the state would not be allowed under the rules, the minister said. The state cabinet had allowed manufacture and sale of wine from fresh grapes harvested locally by farmers under a liquor prohibition law. The decision was taken months after grape growers' society in east Mizoram's Champhai district protested against the seizure of locally brewed grape wine. 30,401 from Myanmar took refuge in Mizoram after Feb 2021 coup: Minister

Altogether 30,401 people from Myanmar have crossed the international border and taken refuge in Mizoram after the neighbouring country's military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February last year, state Home Minister Lalchamliana has informed the assembly. Of the 30,401 Myanmarese, 29,253 are currently sheltered in the state as per reports submitted by district deputy commissioners to the home department on August 20, the minister said in a written reply on Tuesday. The government has completed the profiling of all the Myanmarese in the state, while identity cards and refugee certificates have been issued to 30,177 people. "Although profiling is more or less completed, it is a continuous process and conducted in a phased manner as there are still new entrants and some people used to return to their villages on a regular basis," he said. The Assam government's move of installing statues of freedom fighters from other Northeastern states at a newly inaugurated park in Guwahati has drawn applause from the chief ministers of the neighbouring states. Mizoram reports 153 new Covid-19 cases; infection tally rises to 235,682

Mizoram reported 153 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 69 less than the previous day, with the tally rising to 2,35,682, a health official said. The single-day positivity rate dipped to 18.19 per cent from 21 per cent on Wednesday as the fresh cases were detected from 809 sample tests, he said. According to the official, the death toll remained at 717 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported in the last 24 hours, he said. All the 11 districts of the state recorded fresh cases with Lunglei registering the highest at 42, followed by Aizawl (36) and Champhai (23), he said. Mizoram now has 750 active cases, while 2,34,215 people have recovered from the infection, including 177 on Wednesday. The discharge rate stood at 99.37 per cent, the official said. The state has tested more than 19.65 lakh samples for COVID-19 so far. Altogether 16,97,571 doses of vaccines have been administered to eligible beneficiaries till Wednesday, the official added.
