The father of a 23-year-old slained woman software engineer from Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday reacted to the Supreme Court acquitting his daughter's alleged killer, saying he will "leave it to God," and wondering what he can do. The apex court on Tuesday, acquitted Chandrabhan Sudam Sanap, citing "gaping holes" in the prosecution case and observed that the prosecution failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt. Esther Anuhya (23), who had just returned to Mumbai after a two-week Christmas and New Year holiday, was found dead near Kanjur Marg on January 16, 2014. She was employed with TCS in Mumbai and was last seen exiting the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus railway station. Later, the Mumbai Police arrested Sanap for allegedly raping and murdering Anuhya. Maharashtra sets up panel to explore phasing out petrol, diesel vehicles

The Maharashtra government has a set up a seven-member committee to study the possibility of imposing a ban on petrol and diesel vehicles in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area, in view of the city's worsening air quality. The committee, headed by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, will study and submit a report with its recommendations within three months, as per government resolution (GR) dated January 22. Maharashtra's transport commissioner, Mumbai's joint police commissioner (traffic), managing director of the Mahanagar Gas Limited, project manager of the Maharashtra State Power Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran), president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and joint transport commissioner (enforcement-1) as member secretary are the other panelists. Mumbai police suspects more than one person in Saif Ali Khan stabbing case

Mumbai police suspect more than one person may be involved in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, in which a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national has been arrested, an official said on Saturday. The police had cited suspicion about the involvement of more persons in the crime as one of the grounds for seeking the arrested accused's custody in the remand application, the official said without elaborating further on the matter. He said the police collected blood samples and clothes of Khan and his staff present during the stabbing at the actor's residence in Bandra on January 16, and have sent them to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination. On January 19, the police arrested Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir alias Vijay Das, a Bangladeshi national, for the attack from neighbouring Thane city. Realty firm Arvind SmartSpaces Ltd has entered into a joint development agreement to build a 92-acre township with an estimated revenue potential of Rs 1,500 crore. In a regulatory filing on Friday, the company said it has signed an agreement for a large horizontal, multiuse project in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), "with a total estimated area of 92-acre and a top-line potential of Rs 1,500 crore." Mumbai hoarding collapse: Court refuses bail to accused businessman

A Mumbai court on Wednesday denied bail to businessman Arshad Khan, a key accused in the case pertaining to the collapse of a giant hoarding at suburban Ghatkopar that claimed 17 lives in May last year. Khan was on the run for nearly seven months and arrested from Lucknow in late December. The 42-year-old businessman's bail application was rejected by Additional Sessions Judge Sachin Pawar. The Thane district authorities have issued a notice to the organisers of British band Coldplay's upcoming concert in Navi Mumbai, asking them not to allow participation of children "in any form on stage" at the event. Also, no child should be allowed to attend the concert without earplugs or hearing protection, the district child protection officer said in a notice to the event organisers.
