Anger, lack of communication key in such crimes: Experts on Mehrauli murder

As the police probe a multitude of factors that pushed Aaftab Poonawala to allegedly butcher his live-in partner into 35 pieces, experts agree on a few reasons, including lack of communication and low anger threshold, behind such violent crimes. The 28-year-old accused, a trained chef, evaded detection for six months, was arrested early Saturday after details of the killing and its grisly aftermath came to light during his interrogation. Poonawala allegedly strangled Shradaha Walkar in May and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in South Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days. What could have made the love story, that started in 2019, end in such a grisly murder? Experts blame it on lack of communication, a low anger threshold and normalisation of violence through television and cinema. "There is no one factor that we can directly attribute for such behaviour," forensic psychologi

SC not to transfer appeal against minister Ajay Mishra's murder acquittal

The Supreme Court has declined a plea filed by Union minister Ajay Mishra seeking transfer of the Uttar Pradesh government's appeal against his acquittal in an over 20-year-old murder case. A bench of Chief Justice U U Lalit and Bela M Trivedi was told that the transfer was sought on grounds that the senior counsel, who has to argue the matter at Lucknow, was ordinarily based at Allahabad and because of his old age it would not be possible for him to go all the way to Lucknow for arguments. "We do not go into all these issues as in our view, a request to the high court to hear the appeal for disposal on November 10, 2022, the date given by the high court and agreed upon by both the senior counsel would serve the ends of justice," the bench said. "In case the senior counsel is unable to come down to Lucknow, a request for allowing the said counsel to make submissions through video conferencing may be considered by the high court," the bench said. The case pertains to the murder of .

Texas convicts man for murder of first turbaned Sikh police officer in 2019

A man, who was found guilty of capital murder for gunning down Deputy Sandeep Dahliwal, the first turbaned Indian-American Sikh police officer in the US state of Texas in 2019, has been convicted by a court here. Robert Solis, 50, was convicted by the jury of the Harris County Criminal Court in Houston for the capital murder of 42-year-old Dahliwal, a 10-year-veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. He had drawn widespread notice when he gained permission to wear a turban as part of his uniform in 2015, and was killed in an ambush-style shooting while on duty on September 27, 2019. With Dahliwal's family in the courtroom on Monday, the jury took less than 30 minutes to announce the verdict. Solis, who fired his attorneys, had decided to represent himself in court. He started his opening statement in the punishment phase by asking for the death penalty. "Since you believe I'm guilty of capital murder, I believe you should give me the death penalty," Solis told the jury. Juror

'I hate my life': J-K cop murder case accused wrote in personal diary

From "I hate my life" and "Dear death I am waiting for you" to Bollywood songs about sadness and the final farewell, the recent diary entries of a man who allegedly killed Jammu and Kashmir Director General (Prisons) Hemant K Lohia reveal he was "under depression". Yasir Lohar, the 23-year-old domestic help, was arrested following a major manhunt through the night. It seemed, according to police, the school dropout was fed up with life. In Hindi and broken English, he has also written in his diary one-line sentences like: "I want Restart My life", "Zindagi to bas taklif deti hai, sukoon to maut hi deti hai (life only hurts, death brigs peace), and "everyday starts with expectation but ends with bad experience". Lohar has also scribbled in his diary a popular Bollywood song from movie Ashiqui 2 -- "Bhula dena mujhe, hai alvida tujhe" -- in which the lyrics talks about separation and goodbyes. He wrote he was "99 percent sad" in his life but wore a "fake smile 100 percent". "I am 10

Ankita murder case: Crucial evidence probably destroyed, says former DGP

Former Uttarakhand DGP Aloke B Lal on Tuesday said the hurry shown in the demolition of the resort in question in the Ankita Bhandari murder case must have destroyed crucial evidence. There have been allegations from various quarters about the destruction of evidence in the murder case by an overnight razing of parts of the resort at Bhogpur in Pauri district. "It seems to me that the proper procedure of a demolition of the so-called illegal resort was not followed in this case. Usually, a show-cause notice is issued before any such exercise is undertaken," Lal told PTI in an exclusive interview. "However, in this case, bulldozers razed portions of the resort in the dead of night without any prior notice. The sudden action must have destroyed crucial evidence in the case," he added. "The main purpose behind the late-night action could be seen as the administration's over zealousness to project itself as effective. The action seems to have been aimed at gaining brownie points for qu

The Opposition party also demanded the Narendra Modi government should implement the SC/ST Act with "full force". Two teenage sisters were found hanging from a tree in a sugarcane field located about a kilometre from their house in Lakhimpur Kheri's Nighasan police station limits Wednesday. Six people were arrested on Thursday in connection with the alleged rape and killing of the two girls.
