Seamless pipe industry urges PM Modi to curb imports, save foreign exchange

Industry body STMAI has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to curb rising imports of seamless pipes, particularly from China, warning that unchecked inflows are eroding domestic capacity utilisation and causing a substantial outflow of foreign exchange. The development assumes significance in the wake of Prime Minister Modi's call for energy conservation and austerity measures amid the West Asia crisis. In a representation to the Prime Minister, Seamless Tube Manufacturers' Association of India (STMAI) said India's installed seamless pipe manufacturing capacity stands at about 1.95 million tonnes per annum. However, fluctuating domestic demand and a sharp rise in imports, particularly from China and other countries, have led to sustained underutilisation of the country's manufacturing base. "Over the past several years, the Association has continuously represented these concerns before the Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Commerce, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence ...

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having "completely destroyed" the country's education system and said the government has been unable to conduct even a single examination properly while making claims of being a "vishwaguru". His remarks came after the National Testing Agency said the CUET-UG 2026 for admissions into undergraduate degree programmes across India was delayed at some centres on Saturday due to a technical glitch. TN CM Vijay raises Mekedatu, fishermen arrests in meeting with PM Modi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday and discussed matters concerning the state, including the Mekedatu dam issue, fishermen arrests and the Tamil invocation song row. The meeting assumes significance as it was the TVK chief's maiden official visit to the national capital after assuming office earlier this month. A government press release said the CM expressed serious concern over Karnataka's announcement of a ground-breaking ceremony for the Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery river, saying the move was completely against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) and the verdict of the Supreme Court. The CM requested Modi to issue a clear directive allowing the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu (invocation song) to be sung at the start of government events. During the meeting, Vijay also urged the prime minister to take strong measures to secure the immediate release of Tamil Nadu fishermen and their vessels.

FM Sitharaman forgot fourth F - falling private investment: Congress

The Congress on Tuesday said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had forgotten the "all-important fourth F" -- falling rates of private investment -- while calling for greater focus on the "3Fs" of fuel, fertiliser, and forex. Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said winning elections through large-scale manipulation of electoral rolls is one thing, but recognising what really ails the economy with humility and sobriety and taking remedial actions is an entirely different matter. "The FM has said that the 3Fs -- Fuel, Fertilisers, and Forex -- are matters of great concern. But she forgets the all-important fourth F: Falling rates of private investment that have been in evidence these past few years," Ramesh said on X. He pointed out that net FDI inflows have declined, while private corporate investment as a percentage of GDP has fallen to half of its pre-2014 peak. Indian businesses are seeking more predictable and profitable ventures abroad, and .
