BSP chief Mayawati terms PM Modi's I-Day speech 'very disappointing'

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Friday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Independence day speech and called it 'very disappointing.' In a post on X in Hindi, Mayawati said, "The PM also forgot to remember the assurance given to the BJP MPs in this regard, whereas the SC-ST sections of the country have a bigger complaint than the Congress about adopting such a casteist attitude, because this party, like the BJP, has maintained silence till now on their sub-classification and division, which is unfair." She said, "The speech given by the PM from the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day was quite long, but very disappointing in terms of protecting the rights of crores of Dalits and tribals to reservation etc., whereas this is a very important and burning issue after the decision of the Hon'ble Supreme Court dated 1 August 2024," posted Mayawati on her official handle on 'X' in Hindi. In another post, she said, "Is it right for the PM to call the ...

Counterfeit notes rife again, claims Congress, questions demonetisation

The Congress on Friday claimed the counterfeit notes have become rife once again and termed as an "eyewash" the government's assertion that the overall number of counterfeit notes detected has fallen. The opposition party also claimed that counterfeiting has just moved rapidly to higher-value notes. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh asked what has the 2016 demonetisation achieved if neither black money nor counterfeiting has been curbed. "Eight years after the non-biological PM ground the economy to a halt through demonetisation, it appears that counterfeit notes have become rife once again - The number of counterfeit Rs 500 notes of the new series that have been detected has nearly quadrupled between 2018-19 and 2023-24. The number of fake Rs 2,000 notes has tripled since 2020-21, he claimed. "While the Government can claim that the overall number of counterfeit notes detected has fallen, this is an eyewash. Counterfeiting has just moved rapidly to

BJP neither secular nor civil: Kapil Sibal on PM Modi's remarks on UCC

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a "secular civil code", Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Friday alleged that the BJP has neither been secular nor civil in the last 10 years. In a post on X, Sibal asserted that a "secular and civil country is the need of the hour". In his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi had said a "secular civil code" is the need of the hour for the country. He also described the existing set of laws as a "communal civil code" and termed them discriminatory. Referring to Modi's remarks, Sibal posted on X, "PM: 'Need of the hour...a Secular Civil Code in this country... spent 75 years under the Communal Civil Code'." "My take: Need of the hour: A secular and civil country. In the last 10 years, the BJP has neither been 'secular' nor 'civil'," the former Union minister said. Modi, in his Independence Day address on Thursday, said, "A large section of the country believes, which is true also, that the civil

PM Modi raises concern of Hindus' safety in Bangladesh in I-Day speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hoped that the situation in violence-hit Bangladesh will return to normal soon even as he said 140 crore Indians are concerned over the safety of Hindus and minorities in the neighbouring country. In his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in the national capital, Modi said India is committed to peace and that it will remain a well-wisher of Bangladesh in its development journey. Modi's remarks came amid mounting concerns in New Delhi over widespread incidents of attacks on the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 following weeks of violent unrest. PM Modi to address Indian-American community in New York on Sept 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address members of the Indian-American community at a mega diaspora event here next month when he visits the US for the high-level UN General Assembly session. The community event will be held on September 22 at the 16,000-seater Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. Modi is scheduled to address the high-level UN General Assembly session here on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the UN. Sources told PTI that preparations are in full swing for the community event in Long Island, coming 10 years after Modi had addressed a massive community gathering at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York in September 2014. This happened just months after he had first taken charge as Prime Minister and had visited the city to attend the high-level annual General Assembly session. In 2019, Modi addressed the mega community event Howdy Modi' at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where he was joined by then-US president Donald Trump.

Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi 'once again' to visit violence-hit Manipur

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi again requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to visit violence-hit Manipur and impress upon both the central and state governments to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict there at the earliest. Gandhi said on Thursday, he met a group of Manipuri people living in Delhi who shared their heartbreaking struggles since ethnic clashes broke out in the northeastern state. Out of concern for their safety, they requested that their faces not be shown, fearing retribution, the Congress leader said as he shared a picture of the Manipuri people holding his hand. "This is the harsh reality our brothers and sisters in Manipur endure -- a state of constant fear," he said. "As we celebrate Independence Day, let us reflect on the plight of Manipur, where true

PM Modi's 'communal civil code' remarks insult to Ambedkar: Congress

The opposition on Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of peddling a "divisive agenda", with the Congress slamming his "communal civil code" remarks during his Independence Day speech as a "gross insult" to B R Ambedkar. The Congress also alleged that Modi's capacity for "malice, mischief, and maligning" history was on full display at the Red Fort. The Congress's denunciation came in the wake of Modi saying a "secular civil code" is the need of the hour as the existing set of laws is a "communal civil code" and discriminatory. In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the prime minister said, "A large section of the country believes, which is true also, that the civil code is actually, in a way, a communal civil code. It discriminates (among people)." Slamming Modi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "The non-biological PM's capacity for malice, mischief, and maligning of history knows no bounds.
