OYO saw over 450,000 bookings on New Year's eve: Founder Ritesh Agarwal

Travel tech firm OYO witnessed a record 4.5 lakh-plus bookings on New Year's eve, its highest bookings per hotel per day for India in the last 5 years, Founder and Group CEO Ritesh Agarwal said. In a series of tweets, Agarwal spoke about the "busiest day of the year" for the travel technology company and shared that OYO saw higher bookings in Varanasi as compared to Goa. "Over 450k-plus bookings were made on this New Year's Eve globally. This is 35 per cent more than last year. We are also seeing the highest bookings per hotel per day for India in the last 5 years," Agarwal informed. The year 2022 saw a major uptick in travel and tourism. Globally, leisure destinations have led the travel recovery curve, while in India, business and cultural travel have significantly contributed to the sector. Delhi witnesses massive traffic jams on New Year including India Gate

Massive traffic jams were witnessed on Sunday in several parts of the national capital, including at Connaught Place and India Gate, where thousands of people gathered to celebrate the New Year. According to police, heavy snarls were also reported from ITO intersection and near Akshardham temple. Police said that traffic was also affected as a group of people belonging to Jain community protested near India Gate on Sunday. They took out a march to protest against the Jharkhand government's recent decision to declare Sammed Shikharji, a pilgrimage site for the Jain community, as a tourist place, a police officer said. Several commuters took to Twitter to share their problems. "Utter chaos and long traffic jams around India Gate on Sunday and Saturday. This happens every year," one of the commuters twitted. New Year celebrations: Swiggy delivers 350,000 biryani, 250,000 pizzas

Food delivery app Swiggy delivered 3.50 lakh biryani orders on Saturday and the app dispatched over 2.5 lakh pizzas across the country, according to company sources. Swiggy also said as per a poll it conducted on Twitter, 75.4 per cent per cent orders came for Hyderabadi Biryani, followed by Lucknowi-14.2 per cent and Kolkata-10.4 per cent. "With 3.50 lakh orders, Biryani was the top item that was delivered," sources told PTI. The app had delivered 1.65 lakh Biryani orders at 7.20 PM on Saturday. Tamil Nadu CM announces 4% DA hike as New Year gift for govt employees

The Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees including teachers, pensioners and family pensioners would be increased from 34 per cent to 38 per cent with immediate effect, Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Sunday. The increase, effective January 1, 2023, would benefit about 16 lakh staff and the decision was taken after considering the representation of government employees, he said. Though the move would entail an additional annual expenditure of Rs 2,359 crore, the government has taken up the financial burden considering the welfare of state employees. On the protest of government teachers seeking 'equal pay for equal work', he said a committee of three top officials, headed by Finance Secretary-Expenditure, would be set up. The government has decided to take steps based on the recommendations of the panel, he said. Terming the DA hike a 'New Year gift,' he appealed to the staff to cooperate with the government in its efforts aimed at people's welfare and prosperity.

North Korea opens New Year with short-range ballistic missile launch

North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern waters Sunday, entering 2023 with another weapons test after a record number of missile firings last year. Heavy security deployment in central Delhi for New Year celebrations

Delhi traders' body claims 30% decline in New Year business amid Covid fear

A traders' body in the national capital has claimed that there had been a 30 per cent decline in business ahead of the New Year amid a spurt in Covid-19 cases in some countries. While the COVID-19 pandemic hit New Year celebrations during the past two years, this time, traders were busy preparing to begin 2023 on a grand scale, the Chamber of Trade and Industry said.
