FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried pleads not guilty to cheating charges

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday to charges that he cheated investors and looted customer deposits on his cryptocurrency trading platform. Bankman-Fried, 30, is accused of illegally diverting massive sums of customer money from FTX to make lavish real estate purchases, donate money to politicians and make risky trades at Alameda Research, his cryptocurrency hedge fund trading firm. Bankman-Fried's attorney, Mark Cohen, announced his client's plea, saying: He pleads not guilty to all counts." Wearing a backpack, Bankman-Fried marched through a crush of cameras as he entered the courthouse on a rainy day to make his first appearance before Judge Lewis A. Kaplan. Besides taking a plea during the arraignment, Kaplan was expected to discuss with lawyers a schedule for proceeding toward a trial. Prior to his appearance, his lawyers sent a letter to the judge, saying Bankman-Fried's parents in recent weeks have become the target of ...

Military police enforce driving ban on snow-stricken roads in US's Buffalo

State and military police were sent Tuesday to keep people off Buffalo's snow-choked roads, and officials kept counting fatalities three days after western New York's deadliest storm in at least two generations. Amid some signs of progress suburban roads and most major highways in the area reopened County Executive Mark Poloncarz warned that police would be stationed at entrances to Buffalo and at major intersections to enforce a ban on driving within New York's second-most populous city. Too many people are ignoring the ban, Poloncarz, a Democrat, said at a news conference. Officials said more than 30 people had died in the region, including seven storm-related deaths that Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown's office announced Tuesday. The toll surpasses that of the historic Blizzard of 1977, blamed for killing as many as 29 people in a region known for harsh winter weather. The National Weather Service predicted that as much as 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) more snow could fall Tuesda

Death toll from historic blizzard in western New York rises to 28

The death toll from a Buffalo-area blizzard rose to 27 in western New York, authorities said Monday, as the region reeled from one of the worst weather-related disasters in its history. Much of the rest of the United States was hit by ferocious winter conditions. Those who lost their lives around Buffalo were found in cars, homes and snowbanks. Some died while shovelling snow, others when emergency crews could not respond in time to medical crises. President Joe Biden said his prayers were with the victims' families, and offered federal assistance Monday to the hard-hit state. Nationwide, the storm is blamed for at least 50 deaths, with rescue and recovery efforts ongoing Monday. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz described the blizzard as "the worst storm probably in our lifetime" and warned there might be more dead. Some people, he noted, were stranded in their cars for more than two days. "It's just a horrible situation that we can see sort of the light at the end of the tunn

Writer who accused Trump of rape files upgraded lawsuit in New York

A writer who accused former President Donald Trump of rape filed an upgraded lawsuit against him on Thursday in New York, minutes after a new state law took effect allowing victims of sexual violence to sue over attacks that occurred decades ago. E. Jean Carroll's lawyer filed the legal papers electronically as the Adult Survivor's Act temporarily lifted the state's usual deadlines for suing over sexual assault. She sought unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for pain and suffering, psychological harms, dignity loss and reputation damage. Carroll, a longtime advice columnist for Elle magazine, first made the claim in a 2019 book, saying Trump raped her in the dressing room of a Manhattan luxury department store in 1995 or 1996. Trump responded to the book's allegations by saying it could never have happened because Carroll was not my type." His remarks led Carroll to file a defamation lawsuit against him, but that lawsuit has been tied up in appeals courts as judges decid

Two arrested after Twitter posts threat to 'shoot up a synagogue'

Two men who were arrested at New York's Penn Station after authorities spotted social media posts about attacking a synagogue represented a real danger to the city's Jewish community, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. This was not an idle threat," Adams said at a news conference where he was joined by officials from the FBI, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and other agencies involved in the arrests early Saturday of Christopher Brown, 21, and Matthew Mahrer, 22, on charges including criminal possession of a weapon. This was a real threat, he said. According to the criminal complaint against him, Brown made a series of threats on Twitter including, on Thursday, Gonna ask a Priest if I should become a husband or shoot up a synagogue and die," and then on Friday, "This time I'm really gonna do it. Authorities linked the tweets to Brown, of Aquebogue, on Long Island, and identified Mahrer, of Manhattan, as an associate, said Michael Driscoll, head of the FBI's New York office. A

Massive snowfall in New York due to lake-effect storm near Lake Erie

Piles of snow, in some places taller than most people, buried parts of western and northern New York as a lake-effect storm pounded areas east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario for a third straight day Saturday, with possibly even more to come. Snowfall totals as high as 77 inches (196 cm) were reported in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, home to the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Partway across the state, the town of Natural Bridge, near the Fort Drum Army base, reported just under 6 feet (1.8 metres). The snowfall in some spots ranked among the highest ever recorded in the area, rivalling the eye-popping amounts that fell during similar storms in 2014 and 1945. The snowfall totals, which began accumulating Thursday night in some spots, would be on the order of historic not only for any time of year but for any part of the country, said National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira, at NWS headquarters in College Park, Maryland. The lake-effect storm, caused by cold air picking up ...
