Passenger vehicle sales in India could be weighed down by increase in interest rates for auto loans, if there is no reduction in repo rates going forward as the industry gears up for a single-digit growth this year, according to Maruti Suzuki India Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava. With a high base of record 41.08 lakh units in 2023, passenger vehicle (PV) sales this year could grow in single digit with the overall economic growth of the country being a positive factor, he said. "The auto industry growth is largely dependent on the growth in the overall economy, the GDP per capita growth that's projected 6-6.5 per cent. There's a very high correlation between the two... so that is a positive side," Srivastava told PTI. However, he said, "We have reached a very high level of base, and on that base a continuous high growth may be a little difficult. We saw in 2021 the growth to be almost 27 per cent, in 2022 it was 23 per cent. In 2023 it is 8.3 per .

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales rose by around 4 per cent year-on-year in November, driven by robust demand for utility vehicles, industry body SIAM said on Tuesday. Passenger vehicle dispatches from companies to dealers rose to 3,34,130 units last month, the best ever figure for the month of November, from 3,22,268 units in same month last year. Two-wheeler sales rose to 16,23,399 units last month, a growth of 31 per cent as compared to 12,36,282 units in November 2022. Similarly, three-wheeler dispatches also rose to 59,738 units last month, registering an increase of 31 per cent over 45,664 units in last November. Passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches rose to the highest-ever level for November month as the companies pushed supplies to dealers to cater to the enhanced demand in the festive season. The overall passenger vehicle wholesales rose to 3.35 lakh units last month, up 3.9 per cent from 3.22 lakh units in November 2022. "It is the highest-ever November wholesale figure for the passenger vehicle segment," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava told reporters in a virtual call. He noted that factors like enhanced demand during the festive period and better production due to the availability of electronic components played a role in robust wholesales last month. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd on Sunday reported a 17 per cent year-on-year growth in overall auto sales at 75,604 units in September 2023. Passenger vehicles sales were at 41,267 units last month as against 34,508 units in September 2022, a growth of 20 per cent, M&M said in a statement. The company further said its utility vehicles sales were at 41,267 units as against 34,262 units in the year-ago month, up 20 per cent. M&M had nil sales of cars and vans last month although it sold 246 units in the category in September 2022. "While demand for our key SUV brands continues to be strong, we are keeping a close watch on the availability of semi-conductors and select components to meet the strong festive season demand," M&M President, Automotive Division, Veejay Nakra said. M&M said its total exports declined 5 per cent last month at 2,419 units as compared to 2,538 units in September 2022.

Bajaj Auto on Friday said its total vehicle sales, including sale of commercial vehicles, declined 15 per cent to 3,41,648 units in August. The company had reported total sales of 4,01,595 vehicles in August last year. The total domestic sales dropped 20 per cent to 2,05,100 units in the previous month as compared to 2,56,755 units sold in August 2022, Bajaj Auto Ltd said in a statement. Total vehicle exports fell 6 per cent year-on-year to 1,36,548 units in August from 1,44,840 units shipped to the overseas markets in the year-ago period, it said. Its total two-wheeler sales declined 20 per cent to 2,85,031 units in the previous month from 3,55,625 units sold in August 2022. Two-wheeler exports, however, increased 2 per cent to 1,24,211 units in August 2023 as against 1,21,787 units in the same month last year.
Domestic passenger vehicle sales are expected to cross 10 lakh mark in the festive period this year with demand remaining robust, especially for utility vehicles. The 68-day festive period this year falls between August 17 and November 14. Few days in between are not considered auspicious for buying. In an interaction with PTI, Maruti Suzuki India Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava said that usually the festive season sales account for around 22-26 per cent of the overall sales during a year. Domestic passenger vehicles wholesales registered a 2.94 per cent year-on-year increase in July at 3,02,521 units, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said on Thursday. As per the latest data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), dispatches of passenger vehicles (PVs) from manufacturers to dealers were at 2,93,865 units in July 2022.
