Telangana BJP puts up brave face despite tough contest

Political observers may have a poor perception of the BJP's performance in Telangana based on December 2018 assembly results, but the saffron party will throw a surprise by winning 8-9 seats out of 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state due to the Narendra Modi factor, party's state unit chief K Laxman has claimed. The parliamentary elections are different from assembly polls and there is no prime ministerial face from the opposition parties who can match up to Prime Minister Modi's charisma, he said. The 2014 general election was the last election that a united Andhra Pradesh saw, as the state was bifurcated into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana less than a month after the polls. The BJP had 10.5 per cent vote share and won only Secunderabad seat in alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP). In the assembly polls last year, the BJP could retain only one of the five seats it had won in 2014 "We will not only retain Secunderabad but also win some more seats. The BJP's ambitious target of winning 23 Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal may prove to be an uphill task as discontent is brewing over ticket distribution after old-timers and homegrown leaders were overlooked in favour of turncoats and newcomers. The BJP, which has announced candidates for 40 seats out of 42 in the state, has nominated 10 turncoats, who switched over from Congress, CPI(M) and TMC and has around 20 greenhorns. Protests have erupted in various parts of the state over the issue with several leaders either resigning or becoming inactive during campaign. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh conceded there has been discontent over ticket distribution, but said everybody should abide by party's decision. Turks vote in test for Erdogan as recession hits home

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads into local elections Sunday fighting for what he says is Turkey's survival, with his party risking defeat in the capital amid an economic slowdown. Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have won every vote since the party first came to power in 2002 but this time, analysts say the party could lose Ankara and even Istanbul. It is the first municipal poll since Turks approved constitutional reforms in 2017 to create an executive presidency that gave Erdogan wider powers, and follows general elections last year. Much of the AKP's success has been down to his perceived economic prowess, but days before the vote, the Turkish lira has been sliding again, provoking memories of the 2018 currency crisis that badly hurt Turkish ...
