GMRT won't be shifted for upcoming Pune-Nashik railway project: Vaishnaw

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday that the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) will not be shifted for the upcoming Pune-Nashik rail project. He said the only alternative is to change the railway project alignment. GMRT is located in Khodad village near Narayangaon, around 60 km from Pune, off the Pune-Nashik Highway. Researchers have expressed apprehensions over the likely disruption of the scientific facility's operations after the Pune-Nashik semi-high-sped rail project was given in-principle approval by the Centre. NCP (SP) MP Amol Kolhe recently proposed GMRT's relocation to facilitate the project. "GMRT, located between Nashik and Pune, was a challenge for the project. It's not the telescope for India, but it also belongs to 23 countries. We will have to make all these countries agree to shift telescopes. "Shifting means weakening the most powerful facility of scientific research in India. That is why we decided not to shift GMRT from its current locatio

Minor's right to hold passport can't be snatched over parental dispute: HC

A minor's right to obtain a passport and travel abroad cannot be taken away merely due to an ongoing matrimonial dispute between parents, the Bombay High Court has said. The court in its order passed on Wednesday, a copy of which was made available on Thursday, directed the Pune Regional Passport Office (RPO) to issue a passport to the 17-year-old girl within two weeks, observing that the right to travel abroad was a facet of the fundamental right guaranteed in the Constitution. The RPO had issued a communication to the girl's mother in November 2024, stating that her passport application would not be processed as her father had objected to the same. As per the plea, the girl's parents are embroiled in divorce proceedings. In response to the passport office's communication, the girl's mother sent a declaration that the father's consent was missing in the passport issuance form as there was a matrimonial dispute between the couple. The high court said in its judgment that the ...
