Dedicated freight corridor gives boost to shift from roads to rail: Report

A dedicated freight corridor has given a boost to the modal (freight movement) shift from road to rail even as a host of factors, including the absence of a sector regulator, impeding this shift, a report said on Friday. According to credit ratings agency CareEdge, container cargo transported through railways (rail volumes) grew by a healthy 17.63 per cent year-on-year to 74.38 million metric tonnes during the previous fiscal as compared to 12.51 per cent growth in overall container cargo volumes. The rail co-efficient also expanded by 115 bps to 26.70 per cent during FY22, mainly supported by partial connectivity of the dedicated freight corridor (DFC) with Mundra and Pipavav ports on the western coast, it said. This marks the beginning of the modal shift from roads to rail, the ratings agency added. Railways does not earn profit through passenger trains: Raosaheb Danve

Union minister Raosaheb Danve has said that running passenger trains does not benefit the railways in terms of revenue, and added that the central government runs these services for the convenience of people. The Minister of State for Railways also said that the national transporter tries to make up for the losses incurred due to passenger trains from freight services. He was speaking after flagging off a weekly special train from Jalna to Chhapra Junction (in Bihar) on Wednesday night. "The railways does not earn any profit by running daily (passenger) trains. For every rupee spent, it suffers a loss of 55 paise. There is no profit in running passenger trains...there is a loss. But the Modi government does not work for profit. Over 370 passengers travel by Gandhinagar-Mumbai Vande Bharat train today

More than 370 passengers travelled on board the new upgraded Vande Bharat 2.0 train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai during its inaugural journey on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the semi-high speed train from Gandhinagar Capital railway station around 10.30 am. Among its first passengers were railway enthusiasts and YouTubers besides railway officials, security personnel and media persons. More than 370 persons travelled on the train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, railway officials said. The booking had opened only a day before. The passengers were excited to be part of the train's inaugural run and clicked photos as well as shot videos on mobile phones during the journey. As the train streaked by, passengers at various stations along the route, railway employees working on the adjoining tracks and passers-by on the roads and people in the buildings along the tracks were also seen clicking pictures or shooting videos. Rs 9,494 cr spent on railway projects in Telangana in 8 years: Kishan Reddy

: The NDA government at the Centre has spent nearly Rs 9,494 crore during the past eight years on 12 new major railway projects in Telangana, Union Minister of Tourism G Kishan Reddy said on Friday. Speaking at a function marking the dedication of a new railway line between Medak- Akanapet railway stations to the nation at Medak, Reddy said the Indian Railways has been taking several measures on the safety front resulting in a lesser number of accidents year on year. He said the Centre is proposing to set up a railway coach overhauling unit at Warangal with an investment of Rs 400 crore. The facility is expected to provide employment to 3,000 people. "During the past eight years, 12 new (major) projects have been taken up in Telangana...Rs 9,494 crore was spent during the past eight years for development in Telangana.
