Train controllers say railway reforms leave crucial issues unaddressed

Days after the Ministry of Railways introduced crucial reforms to enhance the working conditions of the train control department and bring it at par with the world class standard, a section of controllers have expressed disappointment for "leaving several important issues unaddressed". On June 25, the ministry announced a slew of reforms for train control department, prominent among them are filling up of 60 per cent post through direct recruitment and 40 per cent from other railway departments through departmental promotional examinations. Besides, the ministry also introduced three-year fixed tenure, better selection criteria, regular performance analysis and several other welfare measures for controllers. However, a section among them felt dissatisfied. "The ministry hasn't given any thought on issues like enhancement of stress allowance and night duty allowance which were very much among important agendas," Servjeet Singh, general secretary of Indian Railway Employees Federatio

Maruti Suzuki sees vehicle dispatches via railways to rise to 35% by FY31

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd expects vehicle dispatches through railways to increase to 35 per cent by 2030-31, its Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said on Tuesday. The company, which inaugurated its second automobile in-plant railway siding at its Manesar facility, has increased vehicle dispatches through railways, from just around 5 per cent in FY 2014-15 to 24 per cent last year, he said while addressing the event here. The automobile in-plant railway siding at Manesar plant is India's largest GatiShakti multi-modal cargo terminal. "Maruti Suzuki pioneered the use of railways for vehicle dispatches over a decade ago by becoming the first company to obtain the automobile-freight-train-operator license in India, and since then, we have dispatched over twenty-five lakh passenger vehicles using railways," Takeuchi said. In March 2024, the automaker became the first automobile company to establish an in-plant railway siding in its Gujarat manufacturing plant.

Railways begin trial to confirm waitlisted tickets 24 hrs before departure

A trial was launched in which the confirmed status of waiting list passengers was announced 24 hours before a train's departure, instead of the current practice of notifying passengers just 4 hours before, the Railway Ministry said on Wednesday. Ministry officials assured that the pilot project would become part of the policy only after receiving a positive response from the passengers. "We have started this pilot project in the Bikaner Division, where charts are being prepared 24 hours before the train departure. The current practice is doing so before 4 hours," Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board, said. He noted that this trial was being done keeping in mind the concerns of passengers who remain uncertain about their journey due to a waiting ticket. "Now, if they know 24 hours before that their tickets are confirmed, they can plan their travel better," he added. However, once a ticket is confirmed, passengers will lose a substantial chunk of

Konkan Railway may run Ro-Ro train service to transport cars, says official

The Konkan Railway will explore the possibility of running a special roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) train service for transporting cars during the upcoming Ganapti festival, if there is sufficient public demand, a top official said. It will be possible to operate such a service if there are at least 40 cars to be transported at a time, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited's Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha told reporters at the KRCL headquarters at Belapur in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday. Asked why the KR does not transport passenger cars by its pioneering Ro-Ro services during the Ganpati festival, Jha said they will have to make changes for ferrying cars on wagons. The Konkan Railway's Ro-Ro service, which allows vehicles to be transported along with their drivers, has traditionally been used for trucks. "I promise you that this time in Ganpati I will announce a special train (Ro-Ro)," Jha said. The official said he did not know people would want to transport their expensive c

Railways' 9000 HP loco most powerful single-unit electric engine: Govt

The 9000 horsepower electric locomotive, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dahod, Gujarat, is the most powerful single-unit electric engine ever developed for Indian Railways, the railway ministry said on Tuesday. "Until now, freight locomotives have typically operated at 4500 or 6000 HP capacities. While 12,000 HP engines do exist, they are created by coupling two 6000 HP units," the ministry said in a statement. "In contrast, the Dahod-built locomotive offers a unified, high-powered solution that can haul significantly longer and heavier freight trains with ease," it added. According to the ministry, this leap in capacity means fewer trips are needed for the same volume of goods, resulting in faster turnaround times, reduced congestion and improved freight efficiency. It stated that the increased hauling power of the 9000 HP locomotive offers a solution to one of Indian Railways' biggest challenges: congestion on high-density freight routes.
