India's external debt increased by USD 47.1 billion to USD 620.7 billion in the financial year ended March 2022, the Reserve Bank said on Thursday. However, the external debt to GDP ratio declined to 19.9 per cent at the end of March from 21.2 per cent at the end of March 2021. Valuation gains due to the appreciation of the US dollar as against Indian rupee and major currencies such as yen, euro and SDR were placed at USD 11.7 billion. "Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by USD 58.8 billion instead of USD 47.1 billion at end-March 2022 over end-March 2021," Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement. At the end of March, long-term debt (with original maturity of above one year) was placed at USD 499.1 billion, recording an increase of USD 26.5 billion over its level at the end of March 2021.
