Thousands descend on Pandalam for 'Thiruvabharanam' procession

Thousands thronged the temple town of Pandalam in Pathanamthitta district Saturday to witness the 'Thiruvabharanam' (sacred jewellery) procession from the Pandalam Valiyakoickal Sastha temple to Sabarimala for the annual 'Makaravilakku' festival. The Thiruvabharanam was shifted from the strong room of Srambickal Palace in Pandalam to the adjoining Valiyakoickal temple, early in the morning for the devotees to have darshan. Later the sacred jewels were kept in three wooden boxes to be taken to Sabarimala by a 22-member team headed by Kulathinal Gangadharan Pillai. The temple head priest performed special rituals at the Sastha temple amid chanting of 'Swami Saranam'. The eldest male member of the Pandalam royal family handed over the ceremonial sword to the royal representative escorting the sacred jewellery. PM to release commemorative coin on Sikh Guru Gobind Singh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release a commemorative coin on Guru Gobind Singh on Sunday to mark the birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru. The Prime Minister will also address a select gathering on the occasion at his residence, a statement from his office said. Modi had attended 350th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh in Patna on January 5, 2017. He had also released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the occasion. In his address, the Prime Minister had underlined how Guru Gobind Singh made a unique attempt to unite the country through the Khalsa sect.

Jaideep Govind appointed Secretary General, NHRC

Senior bureaucrat Jaideep Govind was on Friday appointed Secretary General, National Human Rights Commission, according to an order issued by personnel Ministry. Govind, a 1984 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, is at present Special Secretary and Financial Adviser in Ministry of Rural Development. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment as the Secretary General, NHRC, the order said. In another order, the Personnel Ministry said that P N Sukul will be Secretary, National Commission for Minorities (NCM). The ACC has approved appointment of Sukul as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the NCM with immediate effect, the order said. He will take over as the Secretary, NCM on superannuation of J Rama Krishna Rao on February 28, it said. Sukul is a 1982 batch officer of Indian Defence Accounts Service.

Kite-flying banned during Sankranti festival in Hyderabad

: Kite-flying in religious places and thoroughfares have been banned by the police here from January 14 to 15 on the occasion of Sankaranti festival. Police commissioner Anjani Kumar, in his order, advised people not to fly kites or allow their children run on roads or climb electric posts to collect tangled kites. He said, ''In order to maintain law and order, peace and tranquility and to prevent incidents of breach of peace and accident that are likely to occur, kite-flying is regulated during the celebration of Sankranti festival in the Hyderabad city from January 14-15.'' The police official said parents must advise their children not to fly kites from terraces which do not have parapet walls to avoid any untoward incident.

The 125th anniversary of the entry of Christian missionaries to Mizoram, was observed with religious solemnity in the state on Friday with prayer and church services. Mizoram is a Christian dominated state. Two missionaries from Wales - Rev J.H. Lorrain and Rev F.W. Savidge, fondly remembered by the Mizos as Pu Buanga and Sap Upa, arrived at Sairang village on the banks of the river Tlawng on January 11, 1894, then known as the Lushai country. Community feasts were organised in many local churches of the Baptist Church of Mizoram while the day was observed as a public holiday. The two missionaries were also the ones who established the Baptist Church in the southern part of Mizoram.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday praised Egypt's religious freedoms as he visited a vast cathedral and a mosque in the country's new capital east of Cairo. Syro-Malabar Church to set up internal committees

: Hit by controversies, including sexual abuse involving priests, the Kerala-based Syro-Malabar Catholic Church has decided to set up internal committees at the diocesan level to create a "safe environment" for all, including children and vulnerable adults. The decision to implement the "Safe Environment Policy" was taken at the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Archiespicoal Church being held here. This policy is being implemented to ensure safety and security for all, especially children and vulnerable adults, a Church official said. Six from TN, on way to Vavar mosque, held

Six people, including three women, who wanted to visit the famed Vavar mosque at Erumeli near the Sabarimala temple, have been arrested on charges of trying to create animosity between religious groups, police said Tuesday. All the six, said to be members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, hail from Tamil Nadu and wanted to visit the vavar mosque, which is related to the Sabarimala pilgrimage, they said. The Erumeli Nainar Juma Masjid, also known as Vavar 'Palli' (mosque) is dedicated to Vavar, the Muslim companion of Lord Ayyappa, the adopted son of the erstwhile Pandalam king as per Hindu belief.
