Pant refined defence post-Australia tour: Childhood coach Devender Sharma

After an underwhelming tour to Australia marked by poor shot selection, Rishabh Pant has begun the series against England in an emphatic fashion, scoring a hundred at Leeds to showcase his extraordinary talent. Devender Sharma, one of Pant's childhood coaches alongside the late Tarak Sinha, attributed the resurgence to the work the wicketkeeper batter has put in on his defence and shot selection. "After he failed in Australia, he made a lot of changes to his defensive techniques and curbed his stroke play, which you also saw in the match. Pant is a match-winner," Sharma told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview. "Before he went to England, we discussed his defense because his Australia tour didn't go well. We decided he would play fewer strokes and focus more on batting there. England's conditions are different; there's more movement," he added. The effort Pant has put in behind the scenes were evident in the dazzling array of shots he played en route a magnificent 134 in the first

Going to put best foot forward to make IND happy again: Pant on air tragedy

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant on Wednesday said the players will keep the tragic Ahmedabad air crash in their mind, promising to make the country happy again by producing a stellar performance in the upcoming Test series against England. A London-bound Air India flight crashed moments after its takeoff, killing 241 passengers and crew members aboard last week in one of the most gruesome tragedies in the country's aviation history. "What happened in the aircraft (crash), I think the whole India was disheartened but at the same time the only thing from our sidewe are going to be sticking with them, how we can make India happy again, Pant said in a press conference here on Wednesday. The wicket-keeper batter said the team will put its best foot forward in the five-match series, beginning here from Friday. "Obviously, the emotion is going to be high because of what happened in the crash but at the same time we are going to put our best foot forward for the country, how we can make t

Rishabh Pant reveals India batting order ahead of ENG vs IND 1st Test

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant on Wednesday confirmed that Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4 in the Test series against England, while he will follow the skipper at the No. 5 slot. The retirement of Virat Kohli had made it mandatory for India to find a new batter at No. 4, and Gill is now going to bat at the pivotal position. "I think there is still discussion going on about who is going to play 3. But 4, 5 are definitely fixed. I think Shubman is going to bat at 4 and I am going to stick to No. 5 as of now, and rest we are going to keep on discussing that," he said. Pant also said he maintains a wonderful relationship with Gill on and off the field. "I think me and Shubman have a really good camaraderie off the field. If you're good friends off the field, it eventually comes on the field as well. That is something I've always believed," he noted. "Me and him, we gel really well together. We keep on having conversations and the kind of comfort zone we have with each other, I think t

In England you got to play a little side-on: Pant reveals shift in stance

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant on Wednesday said that he has effected a slight change to his stance from open in white ball formats to more side on in Test cricket to meet the demands of the swing-friendly England conditions. Pant, who is going to bat at No. 5 in the five-Test series beginning on Friday, will have to play a larger role for India with the bat, particularly in the absence of retired stars such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. "I think mostly it's (changes) mental, a little bit of technical too. It is like in one-day and T20s you have to open up your stance because of the kind of shots you want to play, Pant said in a press conference here. Pant has a good record as a batter in England, making 556 runs from 9 Tests at an average of 32.70 with two hundreds and as many fifties. "At the same time coming to England you got to play a little side-on and that really helps. That's the basic technical thing which I have shifted, other than that it's just the mindset thing,"

Rishabh Pant's Class was obvious from the start, says LSG coach Zaheer Khan

Lucknow Super Giants mentor Zaheer Khan has asserted that skipper Rishabh Pant's calibre and ability were never in doubt despite his underwhelming performances for most of the IPL season and the charismatic stumper will emerge stronger after this learning curve. Bought for a whopping Rs 27 crore at the mega auction, Pant endured a lean patch, managing just 269 runs from 13 innings. He found his trademark big-hitting touch only in the last game of the season with a 61-ball 118 but that too ended up in a losing cause against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on Tuesday. "He's been good as a leader. That was a positive for us throughout the season. The form with the bat was definitely a learning experience for him, having this kind of season. "But the ability and calibre -- no one had any doubt about it," Zaheer said in the post-match press conference on Tuesday. The former India pace spearhead said it was good to see the swashbuckling keeper-batter, end the season on a high. "We're h

Rishabh Pant plans short break before England series for mental rest

His IPL campaign over, India's swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Tuesday said he would want to "switch off" for a few days before leaving for the Test tour of England in a "good frame of mind." Pant slammed a magnificent century -- 118 off 61 balls -- to power Lucknow Super Giants to 227 for three against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final league fixture of IPL 2025 here. But RCB, riding on Jitesh Sharma's 33-ball 85 and Mayank Agarwal's 23-ball 41, and the duo's unbroken 107-run partnership for the fifth wicket, pulled off a memorable win to seal their place in Qualifier 1. "Just want to switch off for a few days, not think about cricket and then the England series is coming up and just preparing for that in a good frame of mind," Pant said at the presentation ceremony. The LSG skipper rued the absence of key bowlers for a good part of the season owing to injury. "Eventually you got to play 40 overs of good cricket. 20 overs will definitely not save you in a

Playoff dream still alive, we can surely turn things around: Rishabh Pant

Disappointed but not deflated, Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant is still dreaming of sneaking into the IPL play-offs as he believes his struggling side can turn things around in the remaining three games. Another poor batting effort by the top order led LSG's 37-run defeat at the hands of Punjab Kings on Sunday. LSG have 10 points from 11 games and are currently placed seventh in the league table. With a net run-rate of -0.47, merely winning three games might not be enough for Pant and his men to make it to the play-offs. "The dream is still alive. If we can win the next three matches, we can definitely turn around and do amazing things," Pant said at the post match presentation ceremony. He did concede that 236 was too much to chase and fielding was also below par. "Definitely too many runs. When you drop crucial catches at the wrong time, it can hurt you badly. We thought it would do more, but we did not pick the length right at the start. But that is part and parcel of
