Police have arrested the driver of a truck that hit several vehicles on a 148-km stretch in Madhya Pradesh in his bid to flee after ramming into Madhya Pradesh BJP president V D Sharma's SUV in Bhopal, an official said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Thursday night and the police finally caught the accused after a dramatic chase involving personnel of multiple police stations and spanning several kilometres, during which the accused broke police barricades, damaged several vehicles and injured some cops, he said. A teacher and a driver were killed and 12 students returning from a tour were injured in a collision between a private bus and a truck in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district on Monday, police said. The accident occurred near Chikalputi village on National Highway 30 under the City Kotwali police station limits. "Students of a government school in Kevat Tola village from Mohla Manpur district had gone on a tour of Bastar and Dantewada districts in a hired private bus. "While returning, the bus collided with a truck around 2 AM, killing the driver and a teacher," a police official said, adding that 12 students were injured. Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured children to the Kondagaon district hospital, the official said, adding that four of them are in critical condition. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, he added. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief and directed officials to provide better treatment to the injured.

A Delhi Police head constable, part of the escort team of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, was injured when the car convoy collided with a nilgai on Delhi-Mumbai expressway in Rajasthan's Dausa district, officials said on Saturday. The accident occurred around 11:15 pm on Thursday at Gajulapalli village in Chittoor district, he added. "Four passengers died on the spot and 15 others sustained injuries. A 14-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car while jogging on a service road in Noida Extension, with the police arresting the driver of the luxury vehicle, according to officials. Around 45 passengers were injured when a private bus rammed into two trucks, which had already collided with each other on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan's Dausa district on Thursday, police said. Nangal-Rajawatan DSP Charul Gupta said that a bus of devotees was going from Ujjain to Delhi when the accident occurred due to dense fog. The DSP said around 45 passengers in the bus were injured and more than 20 were admitted to Dausa District Hospital. As many as 1.78 lakh people are killed in road accidents annually in the country and 60 per cent of the victims are in the age group of 18-34 years, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. He lamented that people do not fear the law and many drive two-wheelers without helmets and some jump the red signal. "One unfortunate fact is that of the 1.78 lakh people dying in road accidents, 60 per cent are in the age group of 18 to 34 years. Still there is no fear of law. Some do not wear helmets, some jump red signal," he said during the Question Hour, adding that it was a "strange" situation. Responding to supplementaries, he said while Uttar Pradesh leads in deaths due to road accidents, in cities, Delhi tops the chart in such deaths.
