Truck driver tries to flee after hitting MP BJP chief's SUV, arrested

Police have arrested the driver of a truck that hit several vehicles on a 148-km stretch in Madhya Pradesh in his bid to flee after ramming into Madhya Pradesh BJP president V D Sharma's SUV in Bhopal, an official said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Thursday night and the police finally caught the accused after a dramatic chase involving personnel of multiple police stations and spanning several kilometres, during which the accused broke police barricades, damaged several vehicles and injured some cops, he said. The arrested driver has been identified as Ajay Malviya, said Govind Meena, in-charge of Biora Dehat police station in Rajgarh district. "The truck being driven by Malviya hit state BJP president V D Sharma's SUV in Lalghati area of Bhopal around 9.30 pm on Thursday. Two killed, 12 children hurt as truck collides with bus in Chhattisgarh

A teacher and a driver were killed and 12 students returning from a tour were injured in a collision between a private bus and a truck in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district on Monday, police said. The accident occurred near Chikalputi village on National Highway 30 under the City Kotwali police station limits. "Students of a government school in Kevat Tola village from Mohla Manpur district had gone on a tour of Bastar and Dantewada districts in a hired private bus. "While returning, the bus collided with a truck around 2 AM, killing the driver and a teacher," a police official said, adding that 12 students were injured. Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured children to the Kondagaon district hospital, the official said, adding that four of them are in critical condition. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, he added. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief and directed officials to provide better treatment to the injured.

Farooq Abdullah's convoy car crash: One member of security team injured

A Delhi Police head constable, part of the escort team of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, was injured when the car convoy collided with a nilgai on Delhi-Mumbai expressway in Rajasthan's Dausa district, officials said on Saturday. The accident occurred near the expressway exit in Bhandarej around 1.45 pm on Friday when the National Conference leader was en route to Ajmer. Abdullah was in another vehicle, while the escort vehicle had four police personnel, including head constable Pappuram Meena, officials said. Meena was driving the Innova vehicle when it collided with the nilgai. "The injured head constable was taken to the district hospital where he was given primary treatment and discharged later," Sadar police station head constable Arvind Kumar said. 4 dead, 15 injured as truck rams into bus in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor

Four passengers were dead and 15 others were injured in an accident involving a bus and a dumper truck in this district, a police official said on Friday. The accident occurred around 11:15 pm on Thursday at Gajulapalli village in Chittoor district, he added. "Four passengers died on the spot and 15 others sustained injuries. Of them, four are seriously injured and 11 persons sustained simple injuries," Chittoor sub-divisional police officer T Sainath told PTI. Madurai bound bus was from Tirupati with 26 passengers, he added. The truck hit the bus on its side, police said. Noida teen critical after luxury car hits him while jogging, driver nabbed

A 14-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car while jogging on a service road in Noida Extension, with the police arresting the driver of the luxury vehicle, according to officials. The boy is being treated at a private hospital and his condition is critical, on official said. The incident took place around 6 am on January 9 near Stellar Jeevan Society in the Bisrakh police station area when the Jaguar car allegedly struck the boy from behind, as per a complaint lodged by the victim's father, Murari Singh. "My son Neeraj was running on the service road when the Jaguar, driven recklessly, hit him from behind. He sustained serious injuries to his head and chest and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital," Singh has said in his complaint. The bodies of three workers were recovered on Saturday from the debris of a collapsed iron silo at a smelting plant in Chhattisgarh's Mungeli district after a 42-hour operation, taking the death toll to four, officials said. On Thursday, a labourer was killed and another injured after the fly ash storage structure weighing over 350 tonnes crashed at Kusum Smelters Private Limited, located near Rambod village in Sargaon police station area of Mungeli district. Rescue teams of multiple agencies, involving over 400 personnel, launched an operation after receiving information that some workers were trapped under the rubble, officials said. "The search and rescue operation involving machines, cranes and gas cutters began on Thursday afternoon," Mungeli Superintendent of Police Bhojram Patel told PTI. 45 injured as bus rams into trucks on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan

Around 45 passengers were injured when a private bus rammed into two trucks, which had already collided with each other on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan's Dausa district on Thursday, police said. Nangal-Rajawatan DSP Charul Gupta said that a bus of devotees was going from Ujjain to Delhi when the accident occurred due to dense fog. The DSP said around 45 passengers in the bus were injured and more than 20 were admitted to Dausa District Hospital. Four were referred to Jaipur and some injured left for Noida and Delhi for treatment, she added. Gupta said the accident took place near Lahdi Ka Bas on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Dausa district. The front part of the bus was badly damaged in the accident, police said. Additional doctors and staff were deployed on the instructions of District Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr Deepak Sharma following information that a large number of people were injured.

BEST bus accident: Driver was not drunk, didn't have illness, say police

Medical tests of the driver involved in the Kurla BEST bus accident, which claimed eight lives, have indicated he did not have any mental disorder and was not drunk at the time of the incident, police said on Wednesday. The electric bus, hired on a wet-lease basis by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and driven by Sanjay More, ploughed into a crowd in Mumbai's Kurla area on December 9. The accident claimed eight lives and left more than 40 persons injured. Several vehicles were also damaged in the incident. 60% of those killed in road accidents in 18-34 age group: Govt in Lok Sabha

As many as 1.78 lakh people are killed in road accidents annually in the country and 60 per cent of the victims are in the age group of 18-34 years, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. He lamented that people do not fear the law and many drive two-wheelers without helmets and some jump the red signal. "One unfortunate fact is that of the 1.78 lakh people dying in road accidents, 60 per cent are in the age group of 18 to 34 years. Still there is no fear of law. Some do not wear helmets, some jump red signal," he said during the Question Hour, adding that it was a "strange" situation. Responding to supplementaries, he said while Uttar Pradesh leads in deaths due to road accidents, in cities, Delhi tops the chart in such deaths. In Uttar Pradesh, over 23,000 people or 13.7 per cent of the total deaths are due to road accidents followed by Tamil Nadu with over 18,000 (10.6 per cent) deaths. Three persons died and 17 others were injured after a bus of the Mumbai's civic transport body BEST rammed into pedestrians as well as vehicles on Monday night, police and municipal corporation officials said. It is suspected the accident near the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) L Ward in Kurla took place due to a brake failure, they said, adding the bus driver has been detained.
