Indian biz should take balanced approach in dealing with China: Jaishankar

Indian businesses should take a "balanced" approach in dealing with China as excessive dependence on its supply chain could be detrimental to India's national interest, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday. In an interactive session at industry chamber Assocham, he said the recent resolution of the issues in the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh has resulted in "some progress" but there is a need for further discussions. To a question on evolving relations with China, he said with that country accounting for 32-33 per cent of global manufacturing, it is logical that several supply chains will have to go through China. "It is a reality which we will have to factor (that) into our calculations." "But it is also a fact that if you become excessively dependent on a single supply chain or in the name of supply chain, you open up your market that it is no longer a supply chain, but your sectors are getting hollowed out.

India better placed to engage with Trump 2.0, says EAM Jaishankar

US President-elect Donald Trump has had a positive political view of India and it is in a much more advantageous position than many other countries to build "deeper" relations with his administration and take forward the bilateral ties, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday. In an interactive session at industry chamber ASSOCHAM, Jaishankar at the same time noted that like many other countries, India may also have some issues and it will deal with them. The external affairs minister said there are countries which are looking at Trump 2.0 as a political challenge but for India, it is not the case. "We'll have to work out a political equation with America and that is one area where we score because we've always had a positive political relationship with Trump. I would say Trump has always had a positive political view of India," he said. "Like everybody else, we may also have some issues. We will deal with those issues, but I would say when I look around the world .

Rajya Sabha passes Bill seeking to replace 100-year-old Boiler Act

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday took up a discussion on The Boilers Bill, 2024, which seeks to repeal over 100 years old the Boilers Act, 1923, to provide for the regulation of boilers, safety of life and property of persons from the danger of explosions of steam-boilers and uniformity in registration. Union Minister Piyush Goyal moved the bill to the House for consideration and passing. EAM Jaishankar articulates 3 key principles for engagement with China

India on Tuesday said it is committed to remaining engaged with China to find a fair and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary issue but the relations will be contingent upon strictly respecting the sanctity of the LAC and following pacts on border management with no attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo. In a statement in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the disengagement of troops has been achieved in "full" in eastern Ladakh through a step-by-step process, culminating in Depsang and Demchok, and India now expects the commencement of talks on remaining issues that it had placed on the agenda. India was and it remained very clear that the three key principles must be observed in all circumstances, he said explaining: "one: both sides should strictly respect and observe the Line of Actual Control (LAC), two: neither side should attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo, and three: agreements and understandings reached in the past must be .

India committed to fair boundary settlement with China: EAM Jaishankar

India remains committed to engaging with China to arrive at a fair and mutually acceptable framework for boundary settlement, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday, noting that India-China relations cannot be normal in the absence of a clearly articulated approach. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha, the minister said India-China ties have been abnormal since 2020 when peace and tranquillity in border areas were disturbed due to Chinese actions. "The amassing of troops by China in eastern Ladakh in April-May 2020 resulted in face-offs at a number of points. After the Galwan Valley clashes, we were addressing a situation that not only saw fatalities but events that needed heavy weaponry deployment," he said. The recent developments that reflect continuous diplomatic engagements have set India-China ties in the direction of "some improvement", he said. "We remain committed to engaging with China to arrive at a fair and mutually acceptable framework for boundary ...

Politics of day indulges in cherry-picking facts: Jaishankar on Tipu Sultan

History is "complicated" and the politics of the day often indulges in "cherry-picking facts" and to a considerable extent that has happened in Tipu Sultan's case, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday. He claimed a "particular narrative" about the former ruler of Mysore has been advanced over the years. In his address at the launch of the book 'Tipu Sultan: The Saga of Mysore Interregnum 1761-1799' here, Jaishankar said there are some basic questions that "confront us all" today as to how much of "our past has been airbrushed", how awkward issues have been "glossed over" and how "facts are tailored for regime convenience". The book has been written by historian Vikram Sampath. The external affairs minister said, "In the last decade, the changes in our political dispensation have encouraged the emergence of alternative perspectives and balanced accounts." "We are no longer prisoners of a vote bank, nor is it politically incorrect to bring out inconvenient truths.
