Expert panel suggests semicon research centre with investment of $8 bn

An Electronics and IT ministry-backed expert panel has recommended setting up a semiconductor research centre with an initial investment of around USD 8 billion (about Rs 66,500 crore) over the next five years. The panel on Friday submitted its report to Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar who said that the proposed institution is expected to start taking shape next year. The minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is that Indians should be involved in the leadership of semiconductor research. "A group of top minds in semiconductors around the world and country have sat together to design the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre," Chandrasekhar told PTI. He said that the proposed Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre will be a global institution in semiconductor research. "The design, area in which it should focus etc. have all been today authored and put in a high-quality report by the experts. I'm hopeful that in the year 2024, we should

US moves to limit access to advanced chips hurt supply chains: China

China vigorously protested Wednesday the US Commerce Department's latest update of export controls to prevent exports to China of advanced computer chips and the equipment to make them. The revisions to the US rules were announced Tuesday, roughly a year after the export controls were first launched to counter the use of the chips for military applications that include the development of hypersonic missiles and artificial intelligence. China's Commerce Ministry said the controls were improper and urged that Washington lift them as soon as possible. It said that since the semiconductor industry is highly globalised, the restrictions on chips used for artificial intelligence and other advanced applications were hindering normal trade and economic activities. They violate international trade rules and seriously threaten the stability of industrial supply chains, it said according to a transcript of a briefing on the ministry's website. US semiconductor companies have suffered huge lo

First semicon fab expected within a year: IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The country's first electronic chip manufacturing plant is expected to be in place within a year, according to Union Telecom and IT Minister Aswhini Vaishnaw. The government has initially earmarked USD 10 billion incentive for setting up a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the country including a wafer fabrication plant. The wafer fabrication plants are the first building block of physical chips that are used in all high-tech electronic products. "We are focussing on some niche area where we can take global leadership. Telecom and EV (electric vehicles) have emerged as a big segment for semiconductors. If we focus on developing and manufacturing chips used in these segments then we can become global leaders in these two segments," Vaishnaw told PTI in an interview. He said the work is being done with a focus on these emerging areas. "We should have some good success in the coming months. It will be fab (wafer fabrication), design, manufacturing, complete (ecosystem)," Vaishn
