Judge threatens to boot Trump from court over talking as Carroll testifies

Donald Trump was threatened with expulsion from his Manhattan civil trial Wednesday after he repeatedly ignored a warning to keep quiet while writer E Jean Carroll testified that he shattered her reputation after she accused him of sexual abuse. Judge Lewis A Kaplan told the former president that his right to be present at the trial will be revoked if he remains disruptive. After an initial warning, Carroll's lawyer said Trump could still be heard making remarks to his lawyers, including it is a witch hunt and it really is a con job. Mr Trump, I hope I don't have to consider excluding you from the trial, Kaplan said in an exchange after the jury was excused for lunch, adding: I understand you're probably eager for me to do that. I would love it, Trump shot back, shrugging as he sat between lawyers Alina Habba and Michael Madaio at the defence table. I know you would like it. You just can't control yourself in this circumstance, apparently, Kaplan responded. You can't either, Trump

US Jury finds Trump liable for sexual abuse, awards E Jean Carroll $5 mn

A jury found Donald Trump liable on Tuesday for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her USD 5 million in a judgment that could haunt the former president as he campaigns to regain the White House. The verdict was announced in a federal courtroom in New York City on the first day of jury deliberations. Jurors rejected Carroll's claims that she was raped, but found Trump liable for sexually abusing her. Hours earlier, US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan read instructions on the law to the nine-person jury before the panel began discussing Carroll's allegations of battery and defamation shortly before noon. Trump, who did not attend the trial, has insisted he never sexually assaulted Carroll or even knew her. Kaplan told jurors that the first question on the verdict form was to decide whether they think there is more than a 50 per cent chance that Trump raped Carroll inside a store dressing room. If they answered yes, they would then decide whether ...

State must encourage families to report sexual abuse, says CJI Chandrachud

Sexual abuse of children remains a hidden problem as there is a culture of silence and therefore the state must encourage families to report abuse even where the perpetrator is a family member, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said on Saturday. Speaking at a two-day national programme on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the CJI said it is an unfortunate fact that the criminal justice system functions in a way that sometimes compounds the victims' trauma and the executive must therefore join hands with the judiciary to prevent this from happening. "The long-lasting implications of child sexual abuse make it imperative for the state and other stakeholders to create awareness regarding the prevention of child sexual abuse and its timely recognition and the remedy available in law. Children must be taught the difference between safe touch and unsafe touch. While this was previously couched as good touch and bad touch, child rights activists have urged parents to
