India is emerging as a "good opportunity market" in the gaming business for the consumer electronic major Sony, its India Managing Director Sunil Nayyar said. The company has reported "phenomenal growth" in the gaming business in FY24, with the robust performance of PlayStation 5 and its software peripherals. Sony India's PlayStation dominates the console operating gaming system market here with around 95 per cent market share and has almost doubled its revenue in FY 2023-24 from the segment. However, now, it expects a moderation in the growth rates because of the high base, Nayyar said. "Now, the base is very high because we almost achieved the double business last year. So this year, we intend to have modest growth, but we are developing the gaming business market in the country, including software development and peripherals etc," the Sony India MD told PTI. Consumer electronics maker Sony India's profit edged up 22.18 per cent to Rs 167 crore while revenue from operations increased 20.6 per cent to Rs 7,663.74 crore, according to financial data accessed by the business intelligence platform Tofler. Sony India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's tech major Sony Corporation, logged a profit of Rs 136.67 crore in 2022-23 while its revenue from operations stood at Rs 6,353.74 crore. Its total expenses in 2023-24 were up 20.5 per cent to Rs 7,502.30 crore as against Rs 6,225.87 crore in the previous year. No comment was received from Sony India to an email seeking response on financial numbers till the filing of the story. Sony India's 'advertising promotional expenses' were up 37.6 per cent to Rs 179.02 crore in the financial year ended on March 31, 2024. Its royalty cost, paid to the Japanese parent company, was up 13.6 per cent to Rs 259.07 crore. Sony India's revenue from Consumer Audio and Visuals was up 15.7 per cent to Rs 6,300.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has allowed withdrawal of its order approving the merger of Zee Entertainment and Sony Pictures Networks India and recalled its earlier order passed in this regard. The Mumbai bench of the NCLT had last week recalled its order passed on August 10, 2023, in which it had approved the merger of Zee Entertainment with Sony Pictures Networks India. The bench observed the parties have "mutually consented" to withdraw the scheme on account of the settlement agreement and the board of directors has passed the resolutions to withdraw the scheme of amalgamation. "Accordingly, this Bench allows the withdrawal of the Scheme of Amalgamation and hereby recalls order dated 10.08.2023 in C.P.(CAA) No. 209 of 2022," said NCLT order, a copy of which was shared to bourses by Zee on Thursday.
