Frozen by IOC, boxing in danger of Olympic KO

The International Olympic Committee said on Friday that it has frozen relations with the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and refused to accredit interim president, Gafur Rakhimov, for the Youth Olympics. The IOC executive board, meeting in Buenos Aires ahead of the start of the youth games, which include boxing, in the city on Saturday, issued a statement to AFP, saying they were "freezing contacts". "The IOC is freezing all contacts with AIBA, except the ones on the working level which are necessary to implement the respective IOC decisions - for this reason Rakhimov will not be accredited for the Youth Olympic Games," they said. This is only the latest statement in a week in which the IOC has made clear that it is prepared to kick the AIBA out of the Olympic movement and remove boxing from the 2020 Tokyo Games if "governance problems" were not resolved. On Wednesday, the IOC said "these include the circumstances of the establishment of the election list." The IOC did not ...

Pakistan want Yasir to attack new-look Australia

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed warned his ace leg-spinner Yasir Shah will attack a depleted and new-look Australia when they meet in the first of two Test matches starting in Dubai from Sunday. Australia face a trial by spin as has so often been the case on their tours to Asia. In the space of six years, they have lost 12 of their 15 Tests with only two wins and one draw on tours of India (twice), one each to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates (UAE). They lost 2-0 to Pakistan in UAE in 2014, with Yasir taking 12 and left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar 14 wickets. But Yasir will now be the lone experienced bowler after Babar faded last year. Australia will also be under pressure to overcome the loss of their regular captain Steve Smith and dashing opener David Warner along with Cameron Bancroft after they were banned for up to a year for their part in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March. Sarfraz said he will attack Australia in their first Test since the ...

FC Goa aware of threat posed by Chennaiyin FC defence

FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera Friday said the team is looking to play attacking football but is aware of the threat posed by the solid Chennaiyin FC defence. Defence is still Lobera's biggest concern. A 2-2 draw against NorthEast United in Guwahati showcased the team's strengths and weaknesses. While the defence shipped two goals, last season's Golden Boot winner Ferran Corominas notched a brace. "As a coach, there are some aspects we must work on, defence wise. But we play attacking football and we look forward to playing that," said Lobera ahead of Saturday's ISL match against the defending champions. He said the defensive concerns apart, the team has to focus on remaining aggressive against CFC, which has a strong defence. "Chennaiyin FC still have three foreigners at the back which is similar to last season. The names might have changed but, I think, Chennaiyin is a strong squad and defensively they will be very solid," he added. Chennaiyin FC coach John Gregory said the .

I-League will be tougher challenge than CFL, says Bagan coach

Mohun Bagan may have won the Calcutta Football League convincingly but the upcoming I-League will be a totally different ball game, team's head coach Shankarlal Chakraborty said Friday. The Mariners clinched the local league with a match to spare, ending arch-rivals East Bengal's juggernaut, to lift their 30th title after a gap of eight years. "The CFL win has given the lads a lot of belief in themselves. It's a big tournament for all Kolkata clubs and we all want to do well in it. But there is a big difference between the Calcutta Football League and the I-League," Chakraborty said in an interview to the All India Football Federation. "The I-League is definitely the tougher of the two. The varying conditions in which the guys have to play, pose a lot of difficulties for them. In CFL, you just play at home. In the I-League, some of the away matches can turn out to be really difficult especially the ones that are played at high altitude. "Again, sometimes you also have to play in the .

Seeded fifth at the start of the event, the Indian men played out a 2-2 draw against Poland in the 11th round, while the women recovered some lost ground to beat Mongolia 3-1 after facing some anxious moments Both the Indian men and women's teams finished their campaign garnering 16 match points each. It was a day of drama for the medal contenders but India's hopes had waned once China and United States settled for a 2-2 draw on the top board and Russian men beat France 2.5-1.5 to reach an identical 18 points. The tie-break depended on the Sonenborn-Berger, the chess equivalent of Duckworth-Lewis though a bit less complicated. Rajkot Test: Indian bowlers strike early, Windies trail by 555 runs

Indian bowling attack, led by pacer Mohammad Shami, gave early jolts to West Indies, as the visiting side trails by 555 runs at the loss of six wickets on Day Two of the opening Test here at Saurashtra Cricket Stadium on Friday.Looking to get past the mammoth Indian total of 649 runs, the Caribbean side did not handle the pressure well as they lost wickets in quick succession.Making the early strike, Shami delivered an absolute cracker to scatter the stumps of West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite who was playing at the score of 2.After two overs, the right-arm bowler struck again and this time it was Kieran Powell who had to depart after scoring just one run.Soon, Indian spinners also came into the picture and gave no settling opportunity to the already crumbling West Indies batting order. The spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav scalped one wicket each to put India on the driving seat.India had declared their first innings after scoring a massive total .

But I always think about developing my game. You get a chance.....you need to perform. There is hardly any time in between to ponder about the same," Jadeja said in the post-match press conference."Whenever I get a chance, I look to increase the level of my game. I don't believe in proving anything to anyone instead I try to satisfy myself with the performance," he added.Reflecting on his maiden Test hundred, Jadeja said that the century is "special" adding that he was not in a hurry to get to the 100-run mark."This was my first test hundred so it ...

Game slipped away from us on opening day: Corey Collymore

West Indies bowling coach Corey Collymore Friday said that his team will have to come up with a mammoth effort to save the first Test against India. The visitors were in deep trouble at stumps on the second day after being reduced to 94/6 in their first innings. India declared at mammoth 649 for nine. "You have to be honest with yourself. India is in the ascendancy and it's only Day Two, already seriously behind so it's gonna take a mammoth effort for us to pull it back. But again, you don't come to Test match cricket to just surrender, said Collymore, the former West Indies pacer. Collymore said the team's disappointing performance on the opening day and unavailability of captain Jason Holder and lead pacer Kemar Roach pushed them back a long way. "Yesterday was a very hard day. You have to realise again with two young gentlemen - one making debut and the other playing his second Test (Shermon Lewis and Keemo Paul) - they found it difficult with conditions, playing first time in ...
