India captain Virat Kohli Wednesday said top-order batting is the only aspect left to be sorted in the Test team and "enough space" would be given to youngsters such as Prithvi Shaw to showcase their talent confidently. Kohli said experimentation can only be done in the top-order and has high hopes from the 18-year-old Shaw, who will make his Test debut on Thursday in the opening game against the West Indies here. Shaw is expected to open alongside K L Rahul. "We have a change at the top of the order. We will give these guys enough space and enough chances to feel comfortable at that position. We want them to be confident of what they are doing," Kohli said in the pre-match press conference. "The lower-order is all about contribution, there is no change needed there. Rishabh (Pant) is new but Ashwin and Jadeja have performed in so many games at home they just need to replicate it abroad. "Apart from the top-order getting cemented, I don't think with these Two Test there is a lot we ...
Under pressure after losing their opener, former champions ATK will be desperate to secure their maiden win of the season when they take on Northeast United in a home fixture of the ongoing Indian Super League here Thursday. Despite overhauling the side after their ninth place finish last season, two-time champions, ATK's misery continued as they kicked off the fifth edition of the ISL with a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Kerala Blasters here on Saturday. It was the Kerala outfit's first win in Kolkata and only second against ATK from 11 matches as Englishman Steve Coppell's tenure as ATK coach got off to a losing start. The Highlanders, on the other hand, showed promise in their first game of the season with a 2-2 draw against a strong FC Goa in Guwahati on Monday and they will be looking to register their first win against ATK in five matches. ATK have a 5-2 win-loss record from eight matches against the Guwahati franchise. ATK struggled to hold possession while their team combination,
Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri will look to address the self-confessed shortcomings in his game as he launches the new PGA Tour campaign with a debut appearance at the Safeway Open starting Thursday. The 31-year-old Lahiri was let down by his "short game" and "lapse of concentration" as he finished 99th in the recently-concluded FedExCup points standings following four top-10s. He had finished 51st on the rankings in the previous 2016-17 PGA TOUR season. "It was a disappointing year," said Lahiri. "I think I played decent in the summer, had top-10s at the Travelers and Akron but in the last few events, I had three missed cuts and one average finish. "At the end of the season, you want to play your best golf but I played my worst golf. The opposite happened last year when I got to Chicago (BMW Championship) and finished 51st on the FedExCup standings. The goal was also to win last season but I haven't got myself into contention as consistently as I would have liked." The enforced break ..
Scarred by yet another overseas debacle, India will once again seek home comfort when they take on an inexperienced West Indies in a two-Test series starting here Thursday, aiming to get their combinations in order before the gruelling assignment in Australia. India have endured series losses in South Africa and England over the last nine months but have still managed to remain the number one side in the longest format. A comprehensive beating of the West Indies at this stage can only serve as a morale-booster to the Virat Kohli-led side which faces another stern test with the Australia tour beginning late November. There is not much to gain for India against the eighth-ranked West Indies who, on their part, will be trying their best to make an impression in one of the toughest places to tour and against a side which they have not beaten since 2002. The Indian team was criticised for making too many changes in England and as it panned out, openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan lost .

Champions League holders Real Madrid slumped to a rare defeat in the competition as they went down 1-0 away to CSKA Moscow, while Jose Mourinho's Manchester United misfired again in a 0-0 draw with Valencia. While Bayern Munich were also held by Ajax, it was a happier evening for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City as they beat Hoffenheim 2-1, and Juventus were also comfortable winners thanks to Paulo Dybala's hat-trick. Real were not expected to struggle in Group G as they look to continue their recent dominance of the Champions League, but Julen Lopetegui's side went behind inside two minutes in Moscow following a mistake by Toni Kroos. The German's drilled backpass turned into a gift for Nikola Vlasic, and the winger on loan from Everton fired past Keylor Navas to put CSKA ahead. Casemiro hit the post in the first half -- one of three attempts that found the woodwork for the visitors -- but Real were weakened by the absences of Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos, while Luka Modric started on
Lewis Hamilton will be looking to restore normal service at the Japanese Grand Prix after being gifted a controversial victory by Mercedes in Russia last weekend. But the runaway Formula One championship leader appears to have complicated that task by refusing to rule out leaving Mercedes when his current contract expires in 2020. Hamilton was allowed to claim a 70th career win when Valtteri Bottas was ordered to move over in Sochi -- with the world champion describing it as "the strangest day" of his career. The Briton, who has opened a 50-point advantage over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel with five races left this season, will want to prove he can win in his own right at Suzuka this week as he chases a fifth title. Vettel called the decision by Mercedes to sacrifice a rare Bottas victory and extend Hamilton's championship lead a "no-brainer". However, Hamilton's eighth win of the season and third in a row left the Silver Arrows red-faced and sparked fresh debate over team orders with ..

Told afterwards that she had been branded "Queen of Cool" by an Australian tennis magazine, the 20-year-old looked startled. "I don't like the word 'cool' because then I feel like when someone meets me, they'll be disappointed or something," Osaka told reporters in Beijing. "So they can use 'expressionless' or something," she added with a smile, playing with the impression formed by some observers. "I think actually I'm very emotional." Osaka, whose maiden Grand Slam was overshadowed by Serena Williams's row with the chair umpire in their New York final, faces 10th seed Julia Goerges next at the China Open. Osaka has booked her spot in the season-ending WTA Finals .

"I'm not at 100% of my fitness, no one is at 100%, it's the start of the season and we haven't played many matches," said Neymar. "World football reaches its peak around February and March, with the biggest matches. "I'm working, every match, every day, on improving both physically and technically," Neymar added. Asked about the injury in March which ended his PSG season and compounded his build-up to the World Cup in Russia, Neymar said it had made him "very sad." Brazil's elimination from the quarter-finals of the competition was also a source of "great frustration". But he added: "My injury, the World Cup, they are in the past." After losing their opening group game to Liverpool, PSG need a victory ...

Mumbai had their share of bad luck, when they twice put the ball into the opposition net, but on both the occasions, it was ruled off-side. The home side also missed several opportunities to get back into the game. Jamshedpur began on an attacking note, having a better ball possession. The visitors had a chance in the eighth minute to open account, but Spanish Mario Arques failed to connect a cross from Jerry Mawihmingthanga. But soon, Mumbai came into an attacking mode and created some chances. In the 15th minute, Sauvik Chakrabarti tried to put in the ball into the box from the right, but hit it too close for Jamshedpur custodian Subasish Roy Chowdury to collect. In the 22nd ...
All eyes are on the BCCI now over hosting of a second one-dayer between India and West Indies in Indore on October 24, as the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) seems backing out due to a tussle with the top cricketing body of the country over complimentary tickets. MPCA secretary Milind Kanmadikar said that it was not possible for the association to host the cricket match in such a limited time. "We have not received any formal information from the BCCI about the change in the match venue. We have also not got any clear answer from them on the issue of complimentary tickets," Kanmadikar told PTI. The MPCA secretary sought clarification from the BCCI regarding the provision of its new constitution which states that 90 per cent tickets of the total capacity of the stadium should be put on public sale. This effectively means 10 per cent of complimentary tickets left with state units for sponsors and other people. "On the basis of its new constitution, the BCCI must
