Two more junior gold medals for India at shooting world c'ships
Udhayveer Singh, all of 16, shone bright with an individual gold in the junior men's 25m pistol event after spearheading India to the team gold in the World Shooting Championships here Thursday. Singh shot a score of 587 (291 in precision and 296 in rapid) in the individual competition to grab the gold ahead of American Henry Leverett (584) and Korean Lee Jaekyoon (582). Compatriot Vijayveer Sidhu finished fourth with a score of 581, while Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu took the 20th spot with a score of 568. The trio's combined score of 1736 fetched the team gold for India followed by China, which totalled 1730. The bronze medal went to Team Korea, which shot a score of 1721. In the senior competition, Sheeraz Sheikh was the best-placed Indian at eighth after day one of the men's skeet qualification with a score of 49. Rahane to lead Mumbai in Hazare Trophy
Ajinkya Rahane, who flopped with the bat in the just-ended five-Test series in England, was named on Wednesday to lead Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy limited overs tournament. Mumbai, who are placed in Elite Group A, begin their campaign against Baroda in Alur, near Bengaluru, on September 19 in the 50-over tournament. Income Tax will meet Vijaya Bank in the final of the 54th All India men's basketball tournament for PSG Trophy here tomorrow. In a nail-biting semi-final Wednesday, Income Tax defeated Indian Bank 66-64 with the bankmen leading 56-51 at half time. Asian Games gold medallist Swapna Barman will travel to Mumbai to find the right cure for her troubled knee and back. ISSF World Championship: Junior men's 25m pistol team leads after first day of qualification
Vijayveer Sidhu and Udhayveer Sidhu shot 291 each in the junior men's 25m pistol event to claim the top two individual spots after the first qualification round at the 52nd ISSF World Championship here on Wednesday. They partnered with Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu to be in pole position in the team section as well, with a combined score of 861. Thursday will see the second rapid fire qualification round of the event followed by the final.
SAI holds talks with states to host Khelo India Youth Games
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) held presentations and discussions with the state governments of Assam, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra to explore the possibility of conducting the Khelo India Youth Games in their respective capitals, next year.The move is aimed at taking forward the agenda of sports development at the grassroots level which is the core of the Khelo India Scheme. This will also provide the states with an opportunity to conduct an event of international standards thereby creating a legacy of sports infrastructure as well as an environment to encourage sportspersons.The three states were invited for discussions as they have experience of holding the South Asian Games (Assam), National Games (Jharkhand) and Commonwealth Youth Games (Maharashtra).They made presentations on the infrastructure available in the state, upgradation required as well as the contribution that the states would make in this regard.All proposals will be evaluated by the SAI and the Ministry of Sports
