Chef's Last Supper: Cook scores a dogged hundred in his final Test knock

Legend has it that Sir Don Bradman was teary-eyed when he was beaten by Eric Hollies' googly in his final Test match at the Oval in 1948. However, just over 70 years later at the same ground, Alastair Cook showed no such emotions as he scored another workmanlike hundred, his 33rd and final one in Test cricket, against India. Interestingly, his debut hundred was also against India, at Nagpur in 2006. Not many have scored a hundred on their debut and farewell Test and Cook joined the elite club which also has Greg Chappell and Mohammed Azharuddin. He is only the fifth such cricketer with the other two being Bill Ponsford and Reginald Duff. While Chappell's was an official retirement, in case of Azhar, the Test match against South Africa was his 99th and last one as he was never picked again due to match-fixing allegations. Purists equate left-handed batsmen with grace but Cook was a paradox with his effective batting that was devoid of elegance. David Gower's cover drive remains a stuff

Injured Alli out of England friendly with Swiss

England midfielder Dele Alli will miss Tuesday's friendly in Leicester with Switzerland because of a minor muscle strain, the Football Association announced Monday. The 22-year-old Tottenham Hotspur star suffered the injury in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Nations League. Alli may not have played for the World Cup semi-finalists in any case as England manager Gareth Southgate is believed to be set on making radical changes to the starting line-up against a side that reached the last 16 of the World Cup. Southgate -- who would become the first England manager to suffer four successive defeats if the Swiss prevail -- is not calling up a replacement for Alli having already bolstered his squad with uncapped young Leicester City duo, defender Ben Chilwell and winger Demerai Gray.

Aussie Open chief urges coaching clarity after Serena row

World tennis chiefs need to clarify their position on in-match coaching to prevent another incident after Serena Williams' US Open meltdown, the head of the Australian Open said Monday. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was warned for receiving coaching from the players' box during Saturday's final, triggering a row with the chair umpire in her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Naomi Osaka. Williams was docked a point for smashing a racquet and she called umpire Carlos Ramos a "thief" and a "liar", an outburst for which she was sanctioned a game at a critical juncture in the second set. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said coaching, which is allowed a Women's Tennis Association events but not at men's or Grand Slam tournaments, remained a grey area. "It all centred around coaching... the sport has to really get itself sorted out on what it does with coaching," he told reporters. "Are we going to have coaching? Are we not going to have coaching? What is it going to look like?" The sport ..
