Lashmanan disquaified after finishing third in 10,000m

Long distance runner Govindan Lakshmanan was today disqualified under dramatic circumstances after initially being shown to have secured a bronze medal by finishing third in men's 10,000m race at the ongoing Asian Games here. Lakshmanan crossed the finishing line at third but was later disqualified under IAAF Rule 163.3b (lane infringement). He was initially shown to have clocked 29:44.91s. Vettel cuts Hamilton's championship lead with Spa victory

Sebastian Vettel trimmed Lewis Hamilton's championship lead to 17 points today as he steered his Ferrari to a convincing victory in a crash-hit Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton, who started from a Belgian record fifth pole position, came home a well-beaten second for Mercedes, having been unable to threaten his German rival, who notched his third win at the majestic Ardennes circuit and Ferrari's first since 2009. It was Vettel's fifth win this season, equalling Hamilton's tally, and the 52nd of his career, surpassing the 51 of four-time world champion Alain Prost, and achieved with reasonable ease as he came home 11.061 seconds ahead of the Briton. "More wins than Alain? Whoah," said Vettel. "I was lucky with the traffic today and I could see that Lewis eased off for the final 15 laps. I had a great start and as soon as I was ahead I relaxed. It was a very smooth race." Vettel cut seven points from Hamilton's lead going into next weekend's Italian Grand Prix. "Congrats to Seb - I did ...

North Korea to host Asian youth weightlifting championships

The 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships will be held in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a signal that the secretive country may be coming in from the sporting cold. At the Asian Games weightlifting in Jakarta, which North Korea have dominated winning seven golds, the Asian Weightlifting Federation and North Korea's Sports Minister Kim Il Guk signed an agreement Sunday for North Korea to hold the championships from October 27 next year. North Korean sports administrators have been hoping the country would be able to host international events after combining with South Korea in several sports at this year's Winter Olympics and Asian Games, and also marching under one flag at the Games' opening ceremonies. South Korea's weightlifting officials last sent weightlifters to the North in September 2013 for the Asian Cup and Interclub Junior and Senior Weightlifting Championship. North Korea sports minister Kim said everybody was welcome to come to Pyongyang for the ...

Anand draws again, Caruana maintains lead

Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand played out yet another draw with Alexander Grischuk of Russia to remain in joint sixth spot as the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament draws to a close here. For the records, the seventh draw in as many games did not help Anand's cause much even though the Indian ace remains within striking distance of the leader American Fabiano Caruana, who held Norwegian World Champion Magnus Carlsen to a draw after being down and out for some part of the game. For Anand, it was an Italian opening that Grischuk probably expected and equalised without much ado. The huge labyrinth of theory in the Ruy Lopez leading to nothing these days has been drawing top players to the Italian opening and Anand has been experimenting with it quite often these days. As it turned out, Grischuk did not have a hole in his preparation and Anand yet again dwelled towards a draw in the ensuing queens and pawns endgame. The Indian is now under pressure to win at least one game of the ..

But, Dutee, who had won a 'gender case' against the world governing of athletics, was beaten for the gold by two-hundreth of a second as she came up with the best achievement of her career. Her silver was India's first medal in 20 years in this event after Rachita Mistry won a bronze in 1998 Asiad. Long distance runner Govindan Lakshmanan crossed the finishing line at third in men's 10,000m race but was later disqualified under IAAF 163.3b (lane ...
