However, Manoj went out in the round of 16 after being bested by Kyrgyzstan's Abdurakhman Abdurakhamanov in the welterweight 69kg category. Sarjubala, the reigning national champion, was up against a sprightly opponent and took a while to find her bearings in the bout. The diminutive Manipuri, after being rattled a bit in the opening three minutes, came back strongly in the next two, hitting straight and hitting hard to get the judges' unanimous nod. Earlier, two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Manoj was outwitted by Abdurakhamanov in both ring-craft and precision. The Indian's punches lacked in power and he also struggled to find his way

Former Bengal captain Gopal Bose passes away

Former Bengal cricket captain Gopal Bose died after suffering a cardiac arrest at a Birmingham hospital today. He was 71 and is survived by his wife and son Arijit. An opening batsman, Bose had scored 3757 runs in 78 first-class games with eight hundreds and 17 fifties. He also took 72 wickets with his handy off-breaks including one five-wicket haul. He was the first cricketer from Bengal to play an ODI against England in 1974, which was incidentally only the second ODI that India played. Interestingly, Bose was the manager of the Virat Kohli-led India U-19 team that won the colts World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 2008. After a prolific 1973-74 season, during which he scored a big hundred for Rest of India in the Irani Cup, Bose was included for India's unofficial tour of Sri Lanka, where he scored a hundred and shared a 194-run opening stand with Sunil Gavaskar. He was picked for India's 1974 tour to England and his struggles against the moving delivery meant that he didn't play a Test ...

Palestinian weightlifter heartbroken over sister's death

A Palestinian weightlifter wept as he belatedly learned of his young sister's tragic death from illness -- a day after he competed in the Asian Games. Hani al-Qassas's family and team kept the news from him until after his appearance at the Games, the first international competition he had permission to attend. His five-year-old sister, who had fallen into a coma, died in Gaza three days before he was due to take his turn in the 77kg class. "They did not tell me until a day after my participation," a tearful Qassas told AFP. His coach Hossam Hamada, crying too, said he was the first to find out. "The news had a big impact on me because I had a similar situation with my sister," said Hamada, who also comes from Gaza, where medical facilities are generally poor. "I tried to hide the news from Hani, as far as I could." But Qassas, 23, realised something was going on. "Their behaviour with me was unnatural. I told them 'What is happening? Tell me!'," he said. It was the first time that ...

Sri Lanka Cricket administrative chief Aruna de Silva said the English media had compared the price of tickets in the most expensive enclosure to those in the cheapest open stands. "Whether it is an English fan or a local they pay the same rate. There is no discrimination whatsoever. If England fans want to, they are welcome to buy the cheapest tickets," de Silva told AFP. He said grandstand tickets were available through a hospitality company which had ...
