Vinesh Phogat looks forward to Olympics participation

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who won the gold medal in 50kg freestyle wrestling at the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, arrived at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday.Reflecting on her gold medal-winning performance, which saw her become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, Phogat said her next focus was on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics."The next major competition is Olympics, but I will also go for all the competitions that take place in between and give my best there," she told reporters here.The 23-year-old thrashed her Japanese opponent Yuki Irie 6-2 to give India their second gold of the tournament.India currently stands at the eight spot in the medal table with a total tally of 29 - comprising seven gold, five silver, and 17 bronze medals.

Indian Army gives warm welcome to rowing contingent

The Indian Army gathered at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to welcome the Indian rowing contingent which won three medals, including a historic gold in quadruple sculls, at the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.The rowers clinched a gold and two bronze medals on the sixth day of the competition and were garlanded amid 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' cheers.The Indian men's team comprising Sawarn Singh, Dattu Bhokanal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh bagged the gold medal in the men's quadruple sculls event. The rowers clocked 6:17:13 to win the medal. Indonesia and Thailand settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively.In lightweight double sculls rowing event, the Indian team of Rohit Kumar and Bhagwan Das won bronze after clocking 7:04.61. Japan's Miyaura Masayuki and Takeda Masahiro bagged the gold with a timing of 7:01:70, while the South Korean team of Kim Byunghoon and Lee Minhyuk settled for silver with a timing of 7:03.22.Indian rower .

Jayant Yadav ruled out of Quadrangular A series

Haryana all-rounder Jayant Yadav has been ruled out of the ongoing Quadrangular A Series with a right side strain injury."The all-rounder is suffering from a right side strain injury and will be undergoing rehab at NCA, Bengaluru," said an official statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).Yadav, who played in the opening game for India B team against South Africa A, will be replaced by Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Jalaj Saxena.The Quadrangular series comprises four teams - India A, India B, South Africa A and Australia A.While India A will next face South Africa A on August 27, India B will clash with Australia A later the same day in Bengaluru.

Indian U-16 football team beat Turkish side Besiktas 5-1

The Indian U-16 national football team today defeated local side Besiktas 5-1 in a training match during an exposure tour of Turkey. The Indian colts rode on Vikram Pratap Singh's hattrick (3rd, 40th, 52nd minutes) and strikes from Rohit Danu (81st) and Bhuvensh (87th) to register an easy win over their Turkish opponents. The flood gates opened as early as the third minute when Vikram found the back of the net from close range to propel India into the lead. In the 13th minute, Ricky's rasping shot was saved by the opposition custodian but Vikram once against burst into the scene in the 40th minute and scored to double India's lead going into half-time. The Indians wasted little time in the second half and extended their lead in the 52nd minute when Vikram completed his hattrick, finishing with acumen from inside the box. Victory again eluded five-time World Champion Viswanthan Anand as he played out his sixth draw after splitting points with American Wesley So at the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament here. Tejinder sets Games record, several national records tumble on Day 1

Tejinder Pal Singh Toor set aside the disappointment of not being able to attend his cancer-ridden father, shattering the Asian Games record to open India's gold medal account even as several national records tumbled on the opening day of the athletics competition. He threw the iron ball to 20.75m, obliterating a six-year old national mark, set by Om Parkash Karhana (20.69). The previous Games record was 20.57, set by Sultan-Al Hebshi from Saudi Arabia at the 2010 Guangzhou Games. Gurjit Kaur struck twice as the Indian women's hockey team beat title holders South Korea 4-1 to register its third consecutive win and also book a place in the semi-finals of the Asian Games here today.
