Monika misses out on Asian Games qualification mark in retrial

The 1500m runner Monika Chaudhary today failed to meet the Asian Games qualification mark in the re-trial held here on the orders of Delhi High Court. She clocked 4:35.51 in the re-trial held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, while the qualification mark set by the Athletics Federation of India was 4:16.88. She will now miss the bus for the Asian Games in Indonesia. Monika was excluded from the Indian team for the Asian Games in Indonesia by the AFI selection committee after she registered a timing of 4:41.06 at the confirmatory trial held in Bhutan on August 15. She then filed a petition before the Delhi High Court, challenging her exclusion from the 1500m event of the Asian Games. Before the High Court, the AFI had proposed that it can conduct a re-trial for the athlete if needed. The Court agreed that the athlete could undergo a fresh trial and achieve the qualification mark of 4:16.88 if she has to go to Jakarta. As the timing registered by the athlete was well below the AFI ..

Prithvi, Vihari get maiden Test call-up, Vijay, Kuldeep axed

Young Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw and Andhra middle-order batsman G Hanuma Vihari were today included in the Indian team for the final two Test matches against England. Veteran opener Murali Vijay was axed after a disastrous show in the first two Tests while chinaman Kuldeep Yadav made way for an additional batsman as a third spinner is not required in the seamer-friendly English conditions. Vijay bagged a 'pair' against England at the Lord's and scored 20 and 6 in Birmingham. With Shikhar Dhawan and K L Rahul putting up a much improved show, the axe was always looming large on the 34-year-old Tamil Nadu opener. Also his form outside the sub-continent has been wretched for sometime now even though he has a decent average of 39.33 across 59 Test matches. He has scored 3933 runs with 12 hundreds. There is a fair chance that Vijay has played his last Test at the Lord's. The 18-year-old Prithvi, who had captained India U-19 to World Cup triumph earlier this year, is set to be rewarded for

When Wadekar advised Amre in SA: Play like it is Shivaji Park

When Pravin Amre made his debut as India batsman in South Africa, Ajit Wadekar, the team coach, had a simple advice for him: Play as if you are playing at Shivaji Park. Wadekar, who led India to their first Test series win in both England and West Indies, passed away at the age of 77 on August 15 in Mumbai. Speaking at a condolence meet organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association, Amre recalled how Wadekar shored up his confidence. "I remained 12th man in 12 Test matches. I was not getting the chance in Test," he said. "When (Wadekar) Sir was the coach, it was the historic tour (to South Africa). Sir had faith in me. (One day) he told me you are playing the Test tomorrow," said the right-hander. "He not only gave me the Test cap in the dressing room, but even today I remember his words...he said, 'just imagine you are playing at Shivaji Park, and bat'." Shivaji Park in central Mumbai is famous as the breeding ground of several cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar. "I ..

Grewal, who won a bronze in Sanda 60kg in the 2014 Asian Games, lost 0-2 to Iran's Foroud Zafari in the 65kg semifinals after getting the better of Clemente Tabugara of the Philippines and Akmal Rakhimov in the earlier rounds. Sans Dipa, Indian gymnasts finish 7th in team event final

Forced to compete without Dipa Karmakar, the Indian women's gymnasts finished seventh in the team event final at the Asian Games here today. In the absence of Dipa, who pulled out of team event final after her old knee injury flared up again, the Indians slipped down the order quite early in the proceedings. They eventually finished just ahead of hosts Indonesia in the eight-team final with a score of 138.050. Each team had three gymnasts competing in all the four apparatus -- vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floors -- with three best scores to be counted. Unlike in the qualification round where four gymnasts competed and three best scores counted, even one bad performance does have impact on the team ranking in the final round. For India, Aruna Budda Reddy and Pranati Das featured in all four apparatus while Pranati Nayak did in three, leaving the balance beam apparatus slot to Mandira Chowdhury. In the last apparatus, which was balance beam, Mandira fell in her front salto and ..

India at Asiad: Rahi leads the way with gold, wushu delivers best medal haul

Rahi Sarnobat beat all expectations to become India's first woman shooter with an Asian Games gold and the low-profile wushu players delivered their best ever performance even in defeat on another high-yielding day for the country at the regional showpiece. With four gold, three silver and eight bronze medals in their overall tally, India stood seventh in the medal table, which was led by quite a margin by powerhouse China with 82 medals, including 37 gold. The spotlight was on 16-year-old sensation Manu Bhaker, who shot a Games record qualifying score at the shooting range in Palembang. But to everyone's surprise, it was Rahi who delivered the yellow metal, holding her nerve in a final which was settled after two shoot-offs. "Shooting is life for me," said the former World Cup gold-medallist, who was laid low by an elbow injury after a gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In Jakarta, four bronze medals were settled for in wushu and though not one Indian in the fray ..

After the high of two gold and a bronze medal in freestyle competition, India endured a disappointing end to their wrestling campaign at the Asian Games with Greco-Roman grappler Harpreet Singh losing his bronze medal bout here today. Harpreet, competing in a higher weight category (87kg), lost 3-6 to Kazakhstan's Azamat Kustubayev in a bout in which a few questions were raised about umpiring. Harpreet was India's lone medal hope after Gurpreet Singh (77kg), Naveen (130kg) and Hardeep (97) failed to reach the medal round. Harpreet was given passivity warning when he seemed to be more aggressive than his opponent. Indian coaches cried foul, saying Harpreet has been made to lose. "The Kazakh wrestler has not won but our wrester has been defeated," said one of the coaches. However, national Greco Roman coach Kuldeep Singh said Harpreet should not have conceded point on lift.
