If Hardik learns from Stokes, it could be defining series for him: Ian Chappell

He might still be a "work in progress" but Hardik Pandya could take a cue from Ben Stokes' bowling during the ongoing series, which could prove to be a "defining one" in the all-rounder's career, feels Ian Chappell. The former Australian captain also feels that Pandya should be batting at No 6 in the current line-up. "India's search for a seam-bowling allrounder is still a work in progress but Hardik Pandya displayed determination and discipline to go with his undoubted skills in an important partnership with Kohli," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPN Cricinfo. "Perhaps a move to No 6 would further bolster his batting confidence and if he can also profit from watching Stokes' efforts with the ball, this could be a defining series for the talented all-rounder," Chappell assessed. In his column Chappell paid glowing tribute to Indian captain Virat Kohli, comparing his Edgbaston hundred to Stan McCabe's epic double hundred during the 1938 Ashes, which even made Sir Don Bradman give a .

Ganguly warns against changing and chopping

Former captain Sourav Ganguly has urged Indian batsmen Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane to bat with more determination and advised skipper Virat Kohli to not chop and change the playing XI after defeat in the first Test against England. India lost the series-opener by 31 runs as the Indian batsmen, with the exception of Kohli, failed to tackle the English attack. Opener Vijay (20, 6) and middle-order batsman Rahane (15, 2) contributed 43 runs together in their two innings at Edgbaston. Ganguly, in his instagram post, wrote, "If you've to win a Test then everyone has to score runs." He said, "This was the first Test in a 5 match series & I think this team has the capability to come back & play well. #AjinkyaRahane & #MuraliVijay will have to show some determination since they have scored runs in these conditions before. "I don't think the captain is responsible for the loss. If you're the captain then you'll be criticised for a loss the same way as you're congratulated for a

Root not as good as Kohli but thoughtful bloke: Brearley

England's revered captain Mike Brearley feels that Joe Root is "not quite as good as Virat Kohli" but is still a "thoughtful bloke", who needs to rev up his conversion rate like his Indian counterpart. "Root has a poorer conversion rate in comparison to Kohli. But I think Root is a fine batsman too and I like seeing him do well. He is different a brilliant batsman and quite intelligent. He is not quite as good as Kohli but is still a thoughtful bloke," Brearley told PTI today. Brearley rated Kohli as the best batsman in world cricket and his success is largely due to his "ruthless streak". Kohli scored 149 and 51 but India lost a closely contested first Test against England by 31 runs. However Brearley was all praise for the Indian skipper, who today perched on top of ICC rankings for Test batsmen. "I think Kohli is best in the world and anyone who averages 50-plus in all three formats must be a very, very fine player. He can play in every mode and so can Joe Root. But there is ...

Young batsman Oliver Pope called up for Lord's Test

England have made two changes to their squad for the second Test against India, bringing in uncapped batsman Oliver Pope and pacer Chris Woakes. The second Test starts at the Lord's on August 9. 20-year-old Surrey batsman Oliver Pope has been given his maiden Test call-up as Dawid Malan has been dropped. The latter scored only 8 and 20 in the first Test here and also dropped crucial catches at slip. Pope has had a stellar domestic season as he scored 684 runs at average 85.50 and is the second-highest run-scorer in the County championship this summer. Additionally, he is also right-handed which is seen as a tactic to contend with Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who picked up seven wickets at Edgbaston. Woakes replaced all-rounder Ben Stokes as well. The latter will be in Bristol starting tomorrow, where his trial for affray charges begins. If the case is adjourned for a later date, Stokes will be added to the Test squad. "Ollie Pope has made an exceptional start to his first ...

Momota first Japanese man to win badminton worlds

Kento Momota became the first Japanese man to win the badminton World Championships on Sunday, putting behind him a gambling scandal that threatened to ruin his career. The explosive 23-year-old convincingly defeated China's highly promising Shi Yuqi 21-11, 21-13 in Nanjing. Momota's nascent career descended into controversy in 2016 when Japanese badminton chiefs suspended him for more than a year for visiting an illegal casino, denying him a place at the Rio Olympics. Momota, number two in the world at the time, has been working his way back to the top ever since and the world-ranked seven is currently in the form of his life. But in Shi he faced another of badminton's rising stars. The brilliantly agile 22-year-old defeated legend Lin Dan and Olympic champion Chen Long on the way to the final to confirm his newfound status as China's best player. Shi and Momota had only played each other once before, Momota having the edge that time -- and he was to enjoy it once more. Shi, who was

Alvarez stuns Kovalev in seventh to seize WBO light heavyweight title

Unbeaten Eleider Alvarez knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the seventh round with a stunning upset victory to capture the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title. Alvarez, of Colombia, hit Kovalev with a devastating right hook that sent the Russian to the canvas for the third and final time late in the seventh round. The 35-year-old Kovalev was trying to re-establish his dominance in the light heavyweight division in his first real boxing test since losing in back-to-back fights to Andre Ward. Kovalev was the more aggressive of the two boxers and was winning the majority of the rounds heading into the final round at the Hard Rock Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But he let down his guard in the seventh and Alvarez seized the opportunity to land several power punches and go on to win the fight in one of the biggest boxing upsets of the year. Reeza Hendricks smashed a century on his one-day international debut to guide South Africa to 363 for seven against Sri Lanka in the third match in Pallekele today. Hendricks, whose 89-ball 102 gave the visitors strength after being put into bat first, became only the third South African to register a hundred in his first ODI. Hashim Amla gave South Africa a brisk start with his run-a-ball 59 before being bowled by medium-pace bowler Thisara Perera, who returned impressive figures of 4-44. The 28-year-old Hendricks, who has played 12 Twenty20 matches for South Africa since making his debut in 2014, built crucial partnerships including a 78-run fourth-wicket stand with Duminy.
