England keen to keep Gareth Southgate beyond Euro 2020

England's Football Association wants Gareth Southgate to stay on as manager beyond Euro 2020 but knows it cannot compete on wages if a Premier League club makes an approach. Southgate took England to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia, boosting his stock within the game and ending a run of miserable failures at major tournaments for the national side. "Gareth has been excellent -- we'd like him to stay beyond 2020," FA chief executive Martin Glenn told reporters at Wembley. "I think we'd both like that but if we talked about it at any length it would then be a contract conversation and he's on holiday now, so we'll talk when he comes back. "Benchmarks are always the question and we can never compete with the Premier League in terms of pay -- everyone knows that. "Gareth is on a journey. He loved the World Cup and he's built his own belief that we can go further and that motivates him and (assistant manager) Steve Holland. One of the most powerful things he said after our defeat to ...

County stint and simplifying my action helped me: Ashwin

Star of the first Test's first day, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin says a stint in county cricket and tweaking his bowling action paid dividends. Ashwin (4/60) registered his best figures in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia as India reduced England to 285 for nine on day one yesterday. "When I came here for county stint last year, first thing I realised is the speed with which the bowlers bowl here," Ashwin, who had played for county side Worcestershire, told BCCI.tv. "The conditions here are extremely slow even on the first day. You can have bit of bounce but if the pace is not right then the batsman get a lot of time to play the same ball in the front and back foot, that is something I realised very quickly when I came here." The 31-year-old Indian, who has taken 316 wickets from 58 Tests so far, had decided to work on his bowling action. "Even in the last 12-18 months I spend a lot of time playing club cricket. I was working on simplifying my actions a

UEFA increases Nasri's doping ban to 18 months

Former France midfielder Samir Nasri's doping ban has been increased from six to 18 months following an appeal from UEFA's ethics and disciplinary inspector. The player was suspended for six months in February following an investigation into intravenous drip treatment he received in 2016. A Los Angeles clinic, Drip Doctors, posted a photo of Nasri on its Facebook and Twitter accounts in December 2016, saying it provided the midfielder with a drip "to help keep him hydrated and in top health during his busy soccer season." The clinic described it as an infusion to boost the immune system. UEFA said on Wednesday the 18-month ban for Nasri, who is currently without a club, would be backdated to start from July 2017. At the time of his treatment, he was on loan at Spanish team Sevilla from Manchester City. The 31-year-old Nasri, who also had a spell with Arsenal, recently had his contract terminated at Antalyaspor of Turkey.
