Record man Zaman leads Pakistan to 364/4 against Zimbabwe
Two days after becoming the first player from Pakistan to score a double century in a one-day international, Fakhar Zaman reached a further milestone in becoming the quickest player in history to reach 1,000 runs in the format as Pakistan amassed 364 for 4 in the fifth and final ODI of their tour of Zimbabwe. Zaman broke the previous record of 21 innings by reaching the mark in his 17th innings in the course of a fluent half century. His opening partner Imam-ul-Haq was also in the runs once again, the pair producing their fourth century stand of the series. Indonesia football fans damage Asian Games stadium
Irate Indonesian football fans ripped plastic seats from the stands and hurled them onto the pitch at a stadium scheduled to host the Asian Games next month, an official said today. A league match between Sriwijaya FC and Arema FC ended in chaos yesterday afternoon when the fans tore up seats at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium in Palembang on the island of Sumatra. Pictures showed multi-coloured chairs strewn across the outer edges of the ground, which is bordered by an athletics track. "We are very upset with the supporters who ruined the seats in Gelora Sriwijaya during the game," Rusli Nawi, the stadium's security supervisor, told AFP. "I've been here for nearly 10 years... there has never been damage to the seats like yesterday." The stadium had been renovated for the Games, which are being held in Palembang and the capital Jakarta from August 18-September 2. Lakshya clinches Asia Junior Championship title
Rising shuttler Lakshya Sen stunned reigning world junior champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in straight games to become only the third Indian player to clinch a gold medal at the Asia Junior Championships in Jakarta today. The sixth seeded Indian from Uttarakhand, who had won a bronze medal in the last edition of the competition, notched up 21-19, 21-18 upset win over Vitidsarn in the summit clash that clocked 46 minutes. The Indian U-17 women's football team lost 1-2 against China in its last match of the BRICS tournament in Johannesburg today. According to information received here, two goals by China late in the second half nullified India's early lead. Manisha had put the Indians ahead in the 25th minute when she capitalised on a rebound off a free-kick. The Indian women had a chance to double their lead before half-time in the 42nd minute but failed to make the most out of it as the shot was placed wide of the goal. SAI selects 734 athletes for Khelo India scholarship
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) today cleared 734 athletes for a scholarship programme under Khelo India Talent Identification Development scheme, through which they will get training at government-accredited residential academies. An annual stipend of Rs 1.2 lakh will be given to each player on a quarterly basis to meet their out of pocket expenses, treatment of injuries and other expenses. The athletes will be put up at various Khelo India accredited academies which will take care of the training, boarding and tournament expenses of the athletes. A release from the Sports Ministry said, "For the first time ever, in order to create a strong ecosystem for nurturing talent, various private, state and SAI academies have been accredited. A High Powered Committee accredited 21 non-SAI academies as well.
