Asian school chess: Pune school student bags two medals

City boy Akshay Borgaonkar bagged two medals - a gold and a silver -- at the recently concluded 14th Asian School chess Championship in Sri Lanka in the under-9 years group. Borgaonkar, a fourth grade student at the Vikhe Patil Memorial School, won silver in classical format and gold in the blitz format, a media release issued here said today. Borgaonkar who was seeded third and undergoing training at the Kunte Chess Academy, got a double black colour in the last round of the classic format in a must-win situation. He played the last round against another Indian player for four and a half hours and was one pawn down but finally won the last round taking the silver, it said. In the Blitz format, Borgaonkar won all his rounds and took on top seeded Uzbek player having more than 300 ELO points than him in the final round. He played d4 with a Trompowsky attack against him. The unlikely opening from Borgaonkar rattled the top seed who agreed for a draw which enabled the city .

Captain P R Sreejesh today said that the Indian hockey team's elevation to fifth spot in world rankings would inspire it to perform even better in the upcoming 2018 Asian Games and FIH World Cup. "The elevation gives us a big boost to do well in the upcoming 18th Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta and the World Cup in Bhubaneswar. We want to finish as title winner in our backyard," he said on the sidelines of the ongoing national camp at SAI centre here. Logistical nightmare on cards as BCCI schedule 2017 domestic games

The inclusion of all North Eastern states has forced BCCI to schedule an unprecedented 2017 domestic matches, which many fear would lead to logistical nightmare. The addition of Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Uttarakhand and Bihar has led to an exponential increase in number of matches from senior men, women to U-16 level (boys and girls). The domestic calender starts with senior women's Challenger Trophy from August 13 to 20. The men's calender starts with Duleep Trophy (day/night in pink ball) from August 17 to September 9. It will be followed by Vijay Hazare (National One Dayers) starting September 19 to October 20 (31 days) with 160 matches slotted for the tournament. The Ranji Trophy will be held from November 1 to February 6, 2019 with another 160 matches. There will be another 140 games slotted under National T20 championship for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
