France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said the World Cup favourites are shutting out the mounting excitement at home as they focus on one final push against Croatia. Tens of thousands of people flooded the streets of Paris following Tuesday's semi-final win over Belgium and confidence is high that Didier Deschamps' team can match the achievement of the 1998 winners. L'Equipe's Saturday magazine supplement even came with a front cover photo of crowds on the Champs-Elysees avenue. "See you tomorrow," read the caption. Deschamps' side are strongly fancied to win Sunday's final but lessons from the recent past -- including defeat to Portugal in the final of Euro 2016 -- ensure they are not getting carried away ahead of the match in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. "To be honest with you, we are in our bubble," said goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris. "Of course we know what's happening in France, all the more so after seeing all the images after the Belgium game. "But tomorrow we will be coming up ...
Angelique Kerber won her first Wimbledon championship by stopping Serena Williams' bid for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title. Kerber played cleanly as can be, covering the court so well and picking her spots for big shots, in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Williams in today's final. It is the 30-year-old Kerber's third Grand Slam title. She also beat Williams in the Australian Open final in 2016, then won that year's U.S. Open. Williams is a seven-time Wimbledon champion and her 23 major trophies rank second all-time to Margaret Court. This final came just 10 months after the 36-year-old American gave birth to a daughter and dealt with a serious health scare. She was playing in the fourth tournament of her comeback.
Honda's championship leader Marc Marquez grabbed pole at the German Grand Prix for a ninth consecutive year after qualifying here today. The Spanish star set himself up for a sixth straight MotoGP win at the Sachsenring by breaking the course record with a time of 1 minute 20.27 seconds on his final lap to nudge into first spot on Sunday's grid. Marc and his team proceeded to Q2 with a clear strategy in mind: three attempts -- with a long slide and an unplanned (but also unsurprising, really) near-crash -- to take his ninth consecutive pole at Sachsenring. The 1'20.270 lap was a new pole record for the circuit, Marquez's third pole this season, his 48th in MotoGP, and the 76th of his career. The outcome from the other side of the Honda garage was also positive enough, with Dani Pedrosa improving from yesterday's 20th place to 10th this morning while earning a direct passage to Q2.

Rafael Nadal believes it was an error to keep the Centre Court roof closed as he lost an epic Wimbledon semi-final to old rival Novak Djokovic today. Nadal was defeated 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11/9), 3-6, 10-8 in the second longest semi-final ever played at the tournament, at 5 hours and 15 minutes. It was a second day of epic drama at the All England Club after Kevin Anderson had needed 6 hours and 36 minutes to beat John Isner yesterday. That set the record for the longest semi-final at the tournament and became the second longest Grand Slam singles match ever played. It also meant that Djokovic and Nadal had been unable to finish their 52nd career clash on Friday night. Their semi-final was started under the roof and finished under it on Saturday despite clear blue skies and temperatures hovering close to 30 degrees. Asked if it was logical to have the roof closed, the world number one said: "No. But I will not talk more about this. "If I talk about it, then you are going to write about ...
Belgium achieved their best World Cup finish as goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard secured a 2-0 victory over England in today's third-place playoff in Saint Petersburg. Meunier, who missed the semi-final loss to France due to suspension, scored after just four minutes before Hazard grabbed a late second as Belgium eclipsed the side that came fourth at the 1986 edition. Phil Jones, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all came into the side, while Belgium boss Roberto Martinez recalled Meunier .
