AFI chief calls for 'strictest punishment' against coaches involved in sexual harassment

Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla today called for exemplary punishment against coaches who allegedly sought sexual favours from junior athletes at the regional centers of Sports Authority of India (SAI). SAI sacked one coach from its Tamil Nadu centre after around 15 junior athletes lodged a complaint at the SAI headquarters, alleging sexual harassment. There were similar complaints from Bangalore and Gujarat centers and SAI has ordered the compulsory retirement of one of its accountants, who allegedly sent lewd text messages to a woman coach at the academy. In the harassment case related to Gujarat, SAI has launched an internal probe against the coach. "Nothing is shocking anymore. It is a world wide scenario, people in the US have been jailed and same should happen here," Sumariwalla told PTI on the sidelines of the IAAF run 24:1 here. "I am glad the DG has taken very strong steps and I think we need to go into the details of it and if it is proved to

Women's Asia Cup T20: Bangladesh shock India to earn maiden victory

Bangladesh took full advantage of a complacent India as they recorded a comfortable seven-wicket victory in the Women's Asia Cup T20 competition here today. The win is a historic one as this is the first time that Bangladesh women have defeated India in an international game across any format. After two facile wins over Thailand and Malaysia, India put up a below-par batting performance, scoring 141 for seven in the stipulated 20 overs, which Bangladesh surpassed in 19.4 overs. India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have all got four points from three games but the 'Women In Blue' are leading the standings with a net run-rate of +3.428. Fargana Haque (52 no off 46 balls) and Rumana Ahmed (42 no off 34 balls) added 93 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket to guide the Bangladeshi women to one of their bigger victories in international cricket. Rumana was the 'Player of the Match' for her all-round effort as she picked up 3 for 21 in 4 overs to engineer a middle-order slump when India batted. "I .

Intercontinental Cup is good platform for us ahead of AFC Asian Cup: India winger

Indian football team's young winger Halicharan Narzary today said the ongoing Intercontinental Cup is a good testing ground for the home team ahead of next year's AFC Asian Cup. "The Intercontinental Cup is a very important tournament for us and before the AFC Asian Cup it will be a good platform to test ourselves against some of the teams of different playing styles of the elite level, that we don't come across often," Narzary said. He said a positive result against New Zealand tomorrow will matter as it will help the home reach the final with the momentum firmly on its side. India are high on confidence after back-to-back victories, against Chinese Taipei and Kenya. "Obviously we will be playing for a win against New Zealand, but it will not be easy. It will be remarkable if we win all of our three matches going ahead into the finals of the Cup and keep the winning momentum alive till the finals," Narzary said on the eve of the game. Post the wins, the team was involved in a ...

Ponting to join Australia coaching staff in England

Australia great Ricky Ponting will join the backroom staff of head coach Justin Langer during the team's tour tour of England. Former Australia captain Ponting, one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, was already due to be in Britain to commentate on the five-match one-day international series against 2019 World Cup hosts England that starts on June 13 and a subsequent Twenty20 international. But today's announcement by Cricket Australia will see Ponting joining forces with Langer, an old team-mate, again after the pair coached Australia's Twenty20 team against Sri Lanka on home soil in 2017. Ponting also assisted former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann, who quit following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March, for the Twenty20 tri-series against England and New Zealand earlier this year. As a batsman Ponting averaged over 42 in 375 ODIs, with an excellent strike rate above 80. His 41 hundreds in the format included a brilliant 140 not out in a 2003 World ..

Russia laments winless streak days before World Cup

The recent performances of World Cup hosts Russia have left plenty of questions about their prospects at the tournament that opens next week. On Tuesday, Russia extended their winless streak to seven matches with a 1-1 home draw against Turkey -- meaning they have not chalked up a single victory in eight months. Stanislav Cherchesov's side have five wins, six draws and nine defeats since the former Russian international goalkeeper took over in August 2016. "Everything's bad," declared the Wednesday front page of Sport Express daily, which said the national side's play had dampened the mood of fans in the country. "With such a performance from our national team our chances look pretty low," school teacher Daniil Pospelov, who watched the Turkey match from a Moscow pub, told AFP. "We need to learn how to attack constructively to get a result regardless of whether the opponents' team make mistakes or not." However Vitaly Mutko, who was once the head of Russian football but temporarily ...

Rashid Khan hopes to end drought in Thailand Open

India's Rashid Khan was hoping to end a four-year title drought as he geared up to compete at the USD 300,000 Thailand Open, starting here tomorrow. The lanky golfer enjoyed an amazing season in 2014 when he won two Asian Tour titles in India and Thailand. Khan has been through some lean years since but hoped to turn the corner at the Thai Country Club, a venue where he last played 10 years ago. "I'm playing this golf course after 10 years. The last time I played here was in 2008 (Volvo Masters of Asia) after I won the Faldo Series. I was quite surprised when I reached the golf course because it looked so familiar. Took me two days to find out I played here before," Khan said in a media release. The 27-year-old will look to high-flying countryman Shubhankar Sharma, who qualified for next week's US Open, for inspiration when he goes up against an elite field, which is led by title holder Rattanon Wannasrichan of Thailand. "Shubhankar and I used to play on the PGTI and on the Asian ...
