Give suggestions on BCCI draft constitution: SC to state cricket bodies

The Supreme Court today asked state cricket associations and BCCI office-bearers to give their suggestions on the draft constitution for the apex cricket body, to be approved by it. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also disposed of a contempt petition filed by Cricket Association of Bihar against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials for not implementing its earlier order allowing Bihar to play national level cricket tournaments, including the Ranji trophy matches. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilakr and D Y Chandrachud, considered the submissions of the BCCI, Committee of Administrators (COA) and senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, who is assisting as amicus curiae, that Bihar would take part in national level tournaments in the cricketing season commencing from September. The bench said a draft constitution would be approved by it, which would be binding on the BCCI. However, it clarified that its order on petitions seeking recall ..

Sunil Chhetri to be recommended for Padma Shri

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is set to recommend Sunil Chhetri for the country's fourth highest civilian award -- the Padma Shri -- a huge recognition for the nation's all-time leading goal-scorer should he get the honour. Chhetri leads the India chart with 56 goals from 97 appearances and is one of the forwards with better strike rates in world football. The AIFF said that it was considering recommending a top player for the honour without confirming the name, but sources close to the apex body said it was Chhetri, as the federation recognises the Indian captain's contribution to the sport. "If there is one name in Indian football who deserves to be recommended for such a huge honour, it is undoubtedly Sunil Chhetri. The AIFF recognises Sunil's contribution and has already looking at the criteria," a well-placed source said. When contacted, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das also said that the federation has recommended Jeje Lalpekhlua and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu's names for

Marijne accepts new role, but says was confident of winning Asiad, WC

Sjoerd Marijne has accepted Hockey India's decision to send him back to the women's camp, but the Dutchman said he was confident of delivering results with men's side in the Asian Games and World Cup despite a poor Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Women's hockey coach Harendra Singh was today made in-charge of the men's side, while men's coach Marijne was re-designated as the women's coach in an inexplicable rejigging of roles by the national federation following India's medal-less finish at the CWG since 2006. Dutchman Marijne, who was handed the reigns of the men's team in November last year, is currently at his home in the Netherlands. "We won the Asia Cup with dominating hockey, in the World league we have shown we can beat world class teams and with our New Zealand tour we made another step in our process to win the Asian Games and the World Cup," Marijne said in a statement posted on his official blog. "Unfortunately the Commonwealth Games, we did not perform the way we ...

Had self doubts after Rio Olympics: Ashwini

She is enjoying every bit of adulation that has come her way after playing a pivotal role in Indian badmionton team's first ever gold medal in a mixed team event at Commonwealth Games but doubles specialist Ashwin Ponappa had serious "self doubts" about being able to make a comeback post 2016 Rio Olympics. Everything now seems to be falling in place for Ashwini but it wasn't so two years back when she and Jwala failed to win a single match at the Rio Olympics and decided to end their seven-year old association. She was down with dengue ahead of the Games and it plagued her performance ever since. "It is nice to get all the acknowledgement now but it has not been easy. After 2016 Rio Games, I started doubting myself. There was no power in my smashes, I couldn't hit as harder I did earlier, it was just not working. Though I had recovered from dengue and physically I looked okay, but internally I was struggling to get back to my best. So there were moments when I thought will I ever be ..

Harendra men's coach, Marijne back with women in HI coaching shuffle

Women's hockey coach Harendra Singh was today made in-charge of the men's side, while men's coach Sjoerd Marijne was re-designated the women's coach in an inexplicable rejigging of roles by Hockey India following the medal-less show at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last month. Dutchman Marijne, who was handed the reigns of the men's team in November last year, is currently not even in India and has been sent back to his original position of women's coach after Manpreet Singh and Co's fifth-place finis at the CWG. "Harendra Singh brings with himself a wealth of experience and has previously managed a lot of the men's team players during his stints in the Hockey India League and with the junior teams," Hockey India Secretary General Mohd Mushtaque Ahmed said in a statement. "Marijne's first stint with the women's team was a very successful one and we are sure he will continue to do well with this team as he has done in the past," he added. HI didn't say it in as many words but ...

Harendra new men's hockey coach, Marijne to return to women's camp

In a surprise move, women's hockey coach Harendra Singh was today named chief coach of the Indian men's team while incumbent men's in-charge Sjoerd Marijne was sent back to the women's camp -- a fallout of the poor show by Manpreet Singh and Co. in the Commonwealth Games. Harendra, who coached the Indian men's team earlier from 2009 to 2011, was in-charge of the women's team since November last year after Marijne was named as the men's coach, replacing the sacked Roelant Oltmans. Under the guidance of Harendra, who led the Indian junior men's hockey team to the World Cup title in 2016, the Indian women's team finished an impressive fourth at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. His most important contribution was leading the women's team to the ninth women's Asia Cup title in Japan last year. However, the men's team under the tutelage of Marijne ended a disappointing fifth in Gold Coast, returning without a medal for the first time since the 2006 CWG.

Bottom-placed DD take on inconsistent Rajasthan Royals

Staring at early exit after their sixth loss in eight games, bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils, under new skipper Shreyas Iyer, will have to treat each IPL game as a virtual knockout, starting with their clash against Rajasthan Royals, here tomorrow. After Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain following a string of losses, Iyer was left with the responsibility of guiding the team to the play-offs and the young skipper did score a 40-ball unbeaten 93 to power his side to a massive 55-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders to renew hopes of a turnaround. But last night's 13-run loss to Chennai Super Kings almost dashed all hopes of a comeback and Iyer has an uphill task of inspiring his team in the remaining matches to salvage any hopes of staying alive in the tournament. It was an awful mix-up which ended Iyer's innings yesterday and it proved to be the turning point of the match as despite a 45-ball 79 from Rishabh Pant and an unbeaten 31-ball 54 from Vijay Shankar, Delhi fell short by 13 ..

India increase lead at top of ICC Test rankings

India continued to sit at the top of the latest ICC Test Team Rankings, ahead of South Africa and Australia. Not only that, with the results from 2014-15 being removed from the equation and those from 2015-16 and 2016-17 being weighted at 50 per cent, India have actually stretched their lead over South Africa from four to 13 points. For India, who played four Tests in the 2014-15 season losing 2-0 in Australia and had earlier lost the five-Test tour of England 3-1 in the summer of 2014, the move up was expected following an excellent run since, highlighted by 10 wins in 13 Tests in the 2016-17 season. India have reached an aggregate of 125 while South Africa have lost five points and slipped to 112. South Africa, are however, still comfortably ahead of the remaining sides. Australia are placed third with 106 points after gaining four points following the update, taking back the position from New Zealand, who had overtaken them at the last cut-off date of April 3. England have gained

Dhoni can make life difficult for any captain, says Du Plessis

Chennai Super Kings batsman Faf Du Plessis has heaped praise on skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his ability to hit any bowler and said such a quality can make life difficult for any rival captain. Australian Shane Watson played blistering 78 while Dhoni hit a quick-fire unbeaten 51 to guide CSK to a 13-run victory over bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils in an IPL game here last night. In the last two games against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Daredevils, Dhoni, with his power hitting, has reminded his critics that he is not yet done. He (Dhoni) is in really good form at the moment, so its extremely tough to bowl to him when he is in a form like that. He has got such a big arch and if you want to bowl wide he can still hit you to the leg sid," Du Plessis said at the post-match press conference. He has got a lot of options, so it makes life difficult for a bowler and a captain because he can hit any ball to wherever he wants to. That kind of form is obviously very important to us, he ...
