India to open 2019 World Cup campaign against SA on June 4

India will open their 2019 World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 4 instead of June 2 as the BCCI will have to maintain a mandatory 15-day gap between IPL final and international assignment as per the Lodha Committee recommendation. The 2019 World Cup will be held in the UK from May 30 to July 14. The matter was discussed during the ICC Chief Executives Meeting here today. "The 2019 IPL will be played between March 29 and May 19. But we need to maintain a 15-day gap and World Cup starts on May 30. Therefore as per 15 day gap we could have only played on June 4. Earlier, we were scheduled to start on June 2 but we couldn't have played on that day," a senior BCCI official present here told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "South Africa are our first opponents. The CEC agreed and the matter has been referred to the ICC board," he further added. Interestingly, ICC in their various marquee events have always started with an Indo-Pak fixture which is a sureshot sell-out. It ...

'Answer questions!' Tokyo 2020 warned by Olympic bosses

Tokyo Olympic organisers were given a sharp reminder Tuesday to raise their game after complaints from several international sports federations about preparations for the 2020 Summer Games. IOC coordination commission chief John Coates warned that as the spotlight falls on Tokyo after a successful Winter Games in Pyeongchang earlier this year, Olympic stakeholders would become increasingly impatient for answers. "You are the next host city so the urgency is quite clear to us," Coates told a news conference in Tokyo. "It is very important that when you do presentations, you just have to answer the questions and be forthright in doing so," he added. "It might not always be in your nature, but the questions are going to come." More than 200 national Olympic committees will visit Tokyo in November but a handful of sports federations have already expressed concerns over Tokyo's preparations, most recently at a SportAccord meeting in Bangkok earlier this month. Coates played down the extent

England's Root backs plans for 100-ball format

England captain Joe Root says controversial plans for a domestic 100-ball competition could attract a new audience to Test cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board's proposal to introduce a new format, tentatively titled "the Hundred", with 15 regular six-ball overs and one 10-ball over, has proved divisive since an announcement last week but the England skipper is on board with the idea. One of the fundamental aims of the ECB is to simplify the game for a fresh audience, specifically women and children, and Root thinks if the format takes off it could lead to interest in the longer forms of the game. "It's going to appeal to a completely new audience and I think that's great," Root told the i newspaper. "The more people and kids we can get into sport, the better. "We've got to be very careful we don't measure it against the other formats... it's something to gather a new audience and gain interest, not a threat to other formats. As players, working with the ICC (International ...

Tendulkar recalls 'happy dents' of World Cup triumph

Dents on a car are not known to please its owner but Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar calls the ones on his "happy dents" as they are a reminder of his first and only World Cup triumph. Celebrating his 45th birthday today, the batting maestro recalled how his dented car added to the joy the day India won its second ODI World Cup, in 2011 -- a personal first for him in a record sixth appearance at the marquee tournament. "After we won the World Cup, Anjali (Tendulkar), being superstitious, didn't want to be at the ground. I called her and said 'what are you doing at home? You got to be here in the dressing room, we are all celebrating'," Tendulkar recalled at the launch of cricket writer Boria Majumdar's book 'Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians' here last night. "Somehow she (Anjali) made it to the stadium and while she was getting there, just outside the stadium, people were dancing, celebrating, jumping on top of the cars." RCB-CSK to renew rivalry at Chinnaswamy

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings will renew their intense rivalry after two years when they face-off in the Indian Premier League here tomorrow. With CSK not playing in the previous two seasons, fans on either side were robbed of IPL's most celebrated rivalry. Though Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK lead RCB 13-7 in the overall head-to-head record, both teams have won three games each out of the seven played at the high-scoring Chinnaswamy Stadium with one producing a no-result. Dhoni's men have been much better than RCB in their comeback season, winning four out of the five games they have played so far. The Virat Kohli-captained RCB have won two out of their five matches and would be eager to maintain momentum after the win against Delhi Daredevils at home last week. Good news for the hosts is that AB de Villiers is in devastating form, which he exhibited in the last match when he enthralled his fans with a whirlwind unbeaten 39-ball 90 to power his team to a ...

Off-spinner with leg-breaks is like a multi-lingual: Tendulkar

An off-spinner who can bowl leg-breaks is like a multi-lingual, said Sachin Tendulkar, reflecting on the growing demand for wrist spinners in limited-overs cricket given the difficult questions they are posing to batsmen all around. While Tendulkar did not take any names, his observation on off-spinners trying to bowl leg-break would certainly be music to Ravichandran Ashwin's ears, as he is trying his hand at wrist spin with an eye on national comeback in the shorter versions. "I feel it can only help. It's like you know two to three different languages. Now there is no harm in knowing five or six different languages. It can't take away anything from you," Tendulkar, who is celebrating his 45th birthday today, told PTI in an interview. "It's exactly the same when one develops more variation. So it's wrong to say that they (finger spinners) are joining a bandwagon now that they are bowling leg spin. No, they aren't. Rather, we should see that they have put in effort to develop a ...
