Broad brands Australians hypocrites as ball-tampering row erupts

England pace bowler Stuart Broad branded the Australians hypocrites today as the ball-tampering scandal erupted in South Africa amid continuing tension there over verbal abuse involving players and spectators. Broad also questioned why Australia would want to tamper with the ball when they managed to generate reverse swing in the recent Ashes series in conditions that "you wouldn't expect the ball to reverse". "It's a shame," Broad said when questioned about the scandal in South Africa, at the end of the fourth day's play in the first Test between England and New Zealand in Auckland. Television footage has shown Australian fielder Cameron Bancroft taking an object out of his pocket and appearing to rub it on the ball in the third Test in Cape Town on Saturday. Bancroft has been charged with attempting to change the condition of the ball and his captain Steve Smith has admitted that the tampering, intended to encourage reverse swing, had been planned by senior Australian players. Australia jeered by South African crowd after ball-tampering

A muted chorus of boos greeted Australia when stand-in captain Tim Paine led the team out at the start of play against South Africa today in the wake of a ball-tampering scandal. Paine was made captain for the rest of the third Test -- which has reached the fourth day -- at Newlands after regular captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were stood down following Saturday's revelations. Some boos could be heard but a loud public address system was played until the Australians had taken their places on the field. Former Australia captain Allan Border said in SuperSport television's build-up to the day's play that he was "angry and embarrassed" by Saturday's events. Australian leg-spinning great Shane Warne also spoke of his ire. "I am disappointed in Steve Smith as captain to take that decision to go out and try to do this." Red Bull's Ricciardo denied Australian GP podium finish

Try as he might, Daniel Ricciardo could not find a way past Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to grab a place on the podium in his home Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne today. Ricciardo in his Red Bull strove to pass Raikkonen over the latter stages, but found the implacable Finn a stubborn obstacle on the notoriously tight Albert Park street circuit. Ricciardo was seeking to become the first home driver to win the Australian Grand Prix since it became part of the world championship calendar in 1985. Alan Jones was the last to top the podium in his home grand prix, in 1980, a year when he also was the last Australian to win the Formula One world championship. Ricciardo was forced to start eighth off the grid after a three-place penalty for driving too fast under red flag conditions during Friday's practice. "I'm happy with the way I drove today and we had a very fast race car," he said. "It's not often I sit behind someone for most of the race but it's a tight track and one of the more ...

England three down, need another 237 to save Test

New Zealand snapped up three wickets Sunday, including that of Joe Root with the last ball of the day, to pin down an England side battling to salvage a draw from the first Test. At stumps England were 132 for three, still needing another 237 runs on the final day to save the Test in Auckland. Danger man Root was on 51, his 38th half-century in Tests, when he was smacked on the right index finger by a flyer from Trent Boult in the last over. After medical treatment he shaped up to face the last ball of the day and was caught behind by wicketkeeper BJ Watling. New Zealand had declared their first innings on 427 for eight, with Henry Nicholls unbeaten on 145 to show the pitch held no demons. But England were in immediate trouble as they faced a target of 369 to avoid an innings defeat. The timing of the declaration gave the hosts 50 minutes to bowl at England before dinner in the day-night Test and then have another crack in the twilight-to-dark period. The innings was only into its ...

Need to improve bowling, admits Kaur

Indian women's T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur today admitted her bowling unit needs to improve after England recorded the highest chase in T20 internationals against the hosts. "If you see the first innings, the wicket was not that easy to bat on, but the way Mithali di and Smriti batted it was outstanding. I know in the bowling department we are not improving, we need to improve and we will definitely improve," Harmanpreet told reporters at the post match conference. "Well, if wicket is good, we still need that much guts to bat or ball on, we just cannot depend on the wicket. We always need that effort to do something on the ground. And at least as a batting unit, we are showing that," she added. India Women suffered their second successive defeat as England chased a mammoth 198-4 in just 18.4 over with Daniellie Wyatt scoring a blistering 124. Harmanpreet also opined that lack of dot balls cost the hosts the game. "The only reason we could not make it today is that we did not ball ...
