Concussion subs introduced to county cricket
Concussion substitutes and penalty runs for on-field disciplinary offences will be introduced into county cricket this coming season, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced today. The rule changes, which also include restrictions on bat sizes and punishments for 'mock fielding' will apply across all men's county competitions and the Women's Super League. Last season, Nottinghamshire bowler Luke Fletcher was struck a sickening blow by a ball hit back down the ground by Warwickshire's Sam Hain in a Twenty20 Blast match and left the field. Under the standard Laws of Cricket, substitutes for injured players are only permitted to field, not bat or bowl. But under the ECB plan "like for like" replacements will be allowed if approved by the match liaison officer, who will act on medical advice. Captains Du Plessis and Smith clash over Rabada decision
South African captain Faf du Plessis today hit back at his Australian counterpart Steve Smith's criticism of the decision to overturn a ban on South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. Rabada's punishment of three demerit points for deliberate physical contact with Smith in the second Test in Port Elizabeth was reduced to one point, overturning a two-match ban that would have seen him ruled out of the series. Smith claimed in an overnight interview with Australian journalists that the contact with Rabada in the second Test in Port Elizabeth had been "a little bit harder than it actually looked on the footage". The Australian captain said he was surprised he had not been asked his opinion before the ruling was made and also claimed that a "line in the sand" had been drawn regarding physical contact. CEAT UTT to be held from June 14 to July 1
The second edition of the CEAT UTT will be held in Pune, New Delhi and Kolkata from June 14 to July 1, the organisers said today. The 18-day event that attracts some of the world's best players will offer a total prize purse of Rs 3 crore, with the champions taking home Rs 1 crore, the runners-up Rs 75 lakh and the two losing semifinalists Rs 50 lakh each. The remaining Rs 25 lakh will be given to the top individual performers. The CEAT UTT will begin on June 14 at the Balewadi Indoor Stadium in Pune before moving to New Delhi's Thyagaraj stadium on June 20 for the second leg. The bandwagon will then shift to Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium on June 26, where the grand finale will also be held on July 1. The inaugural edition was held in Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai. CWG participation of two jumpers uncertain, AFI says trying its best
The participation of track and field athletes, S Sreeshankar and Siddharth Yadav at the Commonwealth Games remains doubtful as their names were sent after the deadline even as the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has requested the organisers to allow the duo to compete. High jumper Yadav had crossed the qualifying mark set by the AFI while long jumper Sreeshankar had missed the qualification standard by a mere centimeter during the Federation Cup National Championships in Patiala but was named in the Indian athletics squad by the selection committee. The Federation Cup was the qualifying event for Commonwealth Games selection but it was held from March 5-8 whereas the deadline for sending the final list of entries for each country was on March 7. CWG contingent: No free rides for officials and family members of athletes
Wary of controversy, the Sports ministry will not allow family members of any athlete to travel with the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games and will also put a stop to officials' "fun rides". The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has forwarded a list of 222 athletes and 106 officials, including 57 coaches, 19 managers and 41 others, for the Gold Coast event. Sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is yet to clear the list and it is learnt that ministry is reviewing the lost of 41 other officials. Ministry will take a decision on the contingent in a couple of days but we have been instructed to strictly review the number of officials while keeping the focus on players.
