Foreign squash coach resigns ahead of CWG
India's foreign coach Achraf El Karargui finally put in his papers today, bringing a pre-mature end to his eventful tenure after developing serious differences with an "unprofessional" Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI). Karargui, who is in Egypt, sent his resignation letter to Sports Authority of India (SAI) via email. "Yes, we have received his resignation, which means he will not be travelling with the team to the Commonwealth Games. There is not much we can do about it," a SAI official told PTI. The Alexandria-based coach joined the Indian team in July 2016 and last year, his contract was extended till July 2019. Earlier this month, he had already made it clear that won't be able to work anymore with a "high-handed" and "unprofessional" national federation like the SRFI. AIFF hands Minerva's match-fixing complaint to CBI
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the complaint made by Minerva Punjab FC that their players were approached for match-fixing during the just-concluded I-League. The newly-crowned champions Minerva Punjab on two occasions -- one in January and the other earlier this month -- had alleged match-fixing approaches. "Regarding the first approach relating to the alleged phone calls made to the Minerva players and the support staff, we have handed the information and the details to the CBI," AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said at the draws ceremony for the Super Cup football tournament here. "The second one which we made it public just a day before the I-League title deciding matches a few days back, out integrity officer is looking into the matter for further course of action," he added. Namo Bandra Blasters today made a winning start to their T20 Mumbai League campaign after they defeated Shivaji Park Lions by 12 runs at the Wankhede Stadium here. Put in to bat, riding on half centuries by India player and skipper Shreyas Iyer and Aman Khan, Blasters posted 182 for five on the board. Lions player Bravesh Shetty kept finding boundaries from one end, but couldnt get support from the other end to really threaten the Blasters' total. India to bowl first in rain-curtailed game against Sri Lanka
India won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sri Lanka in a Nidahas Twenty20 Tri-Series match, here today. The match was reduced to 19-overs-a-side affair after over an hour was lost due to rain. India has made one change to its playing eleven, finally bringing in KL Rahul in place of Rishabh Pant. Sri Lanka were forced to make a change, bringing in Suranga Lakmal in place of regular skipper Dinesh Chandimal, who has been banned for two games because of slow over-rates. Odisha to host TT nationals after 12 years
Odisha will host the 80th Senior National Table Tennis Championships after a gap of 12 years. The state had hosted the event in 2001 and in 2006. It will be held in Cuttack in all probability. The decision to allot the event to Odisha was taken during the 81st AGM of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), held at Gurugram yesterday. The other decision the house approved was the national calendar for all five zonals, Inter-Institutional Championships, Cadet and Sub-Junior Nationals as well as Junior and Youth Nationals, taking into consideration India's participation in various international events including the Asian Games in August. The AGM also decided to continue with the existing ranking system for all categories sans men and women. Chandigarh to host two-day sports literature festival
Chandigarh is set to host a two-day sports literature festival, a first of its kind in the northern region, on March 17 and 18. The 'Play Write 2018' will bring together sports personalities who have either written books or have been the subject of one of more books themselves, said Vivek Atray, one of the organisers of the event. He informed that the key speakers during the festival would include world's oldest marathon runner 106-year old Fauja Singh, legendary hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr, boxer Akhil Kumar, skiers Himanshu and Anchal Thakur among others. Sri Lanka hope new software can power cricket recovery
Sri Lanka is adopting an advanced software used by football club Barcelona to manage its injury-prone cricketers as the national team trains for the World Cup next year, officials said today. The island's cricket board hopes the state-of-the-art player management system will restore Sri Lanka's prestige on the world stage after their worst year in international cricket. The board spent $75,000 on the software, adapting it to suit its cricketers. Officials said coupled with a match analysis system designed in-house, Sri Lanka could boast the most advanced player management technology of any cricketing nation. "We are investing a lot of resources and technology to develop the game with an eye on the World Cup," Sri Lanka Cricket chief Ashley de Silva told AFP.
