Keen tussle on cards as Chennaiyin FC meet FC Goa

Chennaiyin FC head into the second leg semifinal against FC Goa in the Indian Super League here tomorrow, with the advantage of having scored an away goal in the first leg, which ended 1-1. The 2015 champions start favourites to enter the final but can expect a stiff fight from the visitors, in search of a maiden ISL triumph. The Chennai team had faced FC Goa in its first league match this season at the Marina Arena and bounced back well after a nightmarish first half to nearly secure a draw. But a lot has happened since that game last November and the two teams have gone through ups and down to reach the play-offs. While Goa have scored the maximum number of goals (43 till the first leg of the play-offs), Chennaiyin haven't been so prolific in finding the net (with 25 so far). The former champions managed an away goal in the first leg on Saturday but would be aware that they could have gained a significant advantage if the forwards had not frittered away things. Also, Goa's ...

Popovic, Roca mesmerised by Chhetri's hat-trick

FC Pune City head coach Ranko Popovic called Sunil Chhetri "the best ever Indian player" while his Bengaluru FC counterpart, Albert Roca, was at a loss of words to define him. Bengaluru FC rode Chhetri's hat-trick to make it to the final of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 season. The India skipper's triple strike gave Bengaluru FC a facile 3-1 win in a tense second-leg semifinal at the Kanteerava Stadium yesterday. Jonatan Lucca's free-kick goal gave Pune some hope of a fightback at 1-2 but Chhetri was too good on the day and sealed the deal with a minute to go for the final whistle. "I think Sunil Chhetri is the best ever Indian player till now, and these kind of players know how to play these kind of games. He scored a hat-trick, and he was the hero today. The young players should learn from this," said Popovic, lauding Chhetri's standout performance on the pitch. Praising Chettri's efforts in a difficult game Roca said: "What can I say about him? Bolton, spinners set up Australia's crushing win over India

Opener Nicole Bolton struck an unbeaten 100 off 101 balls after Australian spinners bamboozled the Indian batting to set up a crushing eight-wicket win in the opening game of the three-match series, which is part of the ICC Women's Championship. Bolton's fourth ODI hundred ensured Australia reached a modest 201-run target in just 32.1 overs. The experienced Ellyse Perry (25 not out) hit the winning four. India would have been bowled out for far less if it was not for the 76-run partnership between Sushma Verma (41) and Pooja Vastrakar (51) for the eighth wicket, helping them muster 200 in 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen led a stellar show from the Australian spinners, taking four wickets for 30 runs in 10 overs. Leggie Amanda-Jade Wellington picked up three wickets and Ashleigh Gardner removed Smriti Mandhana (12). It was a sweet result for the visitors, who had lost to India in the World Cup semifinals. The second ODI will be played here on Thursday. Australia were never in .

Bhambri sends world No 12 Lucas Poulie packing

Indian Davis Cupper Yuki Bhambri registered the biggest win of his career as he toppled world number 12 Lucas Pouille to breeze into the third round of the Indian Wells Masters, here. In a stunning performance, the 110th ranked Yuki, who qualified for the main draw, dispatched the ninth seed Frenchman 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 19 minutes. The win is the biggest for the 25-year-old Indian, who had shocked the tennis world by demolishing Citi Open defending champion and world number 22 Gael Monfils in August 2017. Yuki had beaten world number 16 Fabio Fognini in 2014 at the Chennai Open but the Italian had retired from that match due to a fitness issue. I would beef for Drogba, fish for Aguero: Vidic

Beef and chicken for Drogba, fish for Aguero -- former Manchester United star Nemanja Vidic's meticulously planned pre-match diet, back in the day, certainly provides food for thought. Vidic, who had earned a reputation as one of the world's best centre-backs during his days at Old Trafford, was in the country recently to launch the India chapter of Football For Peace. "I eat more chicken, beef and pasta before the game (when I have to play against (Didier) Drogba but if I play against (Sergio) Aguero I eat fish, you know, right food to maybe lose one or two kilos," Vidic said, recalling his preparations before lining up against the world's best in his heydays. Football For Peace, which is supported by the English Premier League and the UK Foreign Office, will identify 10-12 cities in the country as part of its 'Cities for Peace' initiative. Asked about the Premier League initiative in India, the 36-year-old central defender from Serbia had good things to say and sounded optimistic ...

India's women's team all out for 200 against Australia

A 76-run partnership for the eighth wicket saved India the blushes before being bowled out for 200 against Australia in the first One-day International of the ICC Women's Championship here today. Electing to bat after winning the toss, India lost wickets at regular intervals before the duo of Pooja Vastrakar (51) and Sushma Verma (41) steadied the ship with sensible batting. This was the 18-year-old Vastrakar's maiden half century, and she laced her crucial knock with seven boundaries and a six, while Verma found the fence three times during her 71-ball innings. The total looked a far cry when Shikha Pandey was dismissed in the 32nd over with the score reading 113 for seven. That was the time when Verma and Vastrakar joined hands to bail India out of a precarious situation. The hosts were off to a steady start with openers, Punam Raut (37) and Smriti Mandhana (12), putting on 38 runs in nine overs. However, Mandhana was trapped in front of the wicket by Amanda-Jade Wellington in the ..
