There's no extra pressure, says 'improved' Wozniacki

A confident Caroline Wozniacki declared Saturday she was in the form of her life as she targets a first Grand Slam title when the Australian Open begins next week. The Dane first rose to world number one eight years ago and is back riding high at number two after a 2017 season in which she reached eight finals and won the season-ending Tour Championship. "I think I've improved everything (since first becoming number one)," Wozniacki said at Melbourne Park. "I think nothing very drastic, but at the same time it's small improvements all the time. That's also what makes tennis fun. You're never perfect. There's always things you can work on." And she claimed she felt no extra pressure to win a first Grand Slam, despite rising expectations with defending champion Serena Williams ruled out after the birth of her first child. "I don't put more, I don't put less pressure. It's just the same, you know. It's a new tournament, a new year. "I'm healthy. I have the opportunity to ...

Muguruza aims for 'pain-free' Australian Open

World number three Garbine Muguruza said Saturday she was hoping to be "pain-free" to begin her Australian Open campaign, but admitted she would have liked a better start to 2018. The Wimbledon champion pulled out of the Sydney International with a thigh injury straight after beating Kiki Bertens on Wednesday. A week earlier she had retired from the Brisbane International with cramps. "It's true, I would like to have played more matches," said the 24-year-old Spaniard, who said she was happy with her form, if not her fitness. "I only played two matches, but I felt that my tennis was good. I think sometimes you don't need that many matches. With my experience, sometimes you play very good, and you don't need 25 tournaments before," she said. Muguruza revealed her injury had responded well to treatment but she could not guarantee she would be 100 percent fit come the start of the year's first Grand Slam on Monday. "Well, it's better. I'm training every day. I'm doing ...

Ashwin's three, lively fielding drive India's fightback

India effected a dramatic turnaround by taking three wickets for five runs in the last hour to reduce South Africa to 269 for six at stumps on the opening day of the second Test here. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin snared three crucial wickets as the visitors fought back after the duo of Hashim Amla (82) and Aiden Markram (94) batted resolutely. At the end of day's play, captain Faf du Plessis was unbeaten on 24 runs (77 balls, 3 fours) while Keshav Maharaj was batting on 10. On a day when the Indian pacers failed to make much of a dent on an easy-paced wicket, Aswhin (3/90) emerged as the most successful bowler as he dismissed Markram (94), Dean Elgar (31) and Quinton de Kock (0). The hosts were going strong with Amla (82) anchoring the Proteas innings after Markram, playing on his home ground, missed out on a well-deserved century by a whisker. However, two run-outs and a wicket by Ashwin within 13 balls saw South Africa slump from 246/3 to 251/6 as India sought to ...

Kohli should drop himself if he fails at Centurion: Sehwag

Former swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag today stated that Virat Kohli "should drop himself" if he fails in the second Test against South Africa, launching a scathing attack on the India skipper for his team selection. Coming into the game at Centurion after suffering a 72- run defeat in the first Test, India made three changes to their playing XI with KL Rahul replacing Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma coming in for Bhuvneshwar, whose three-wicket burst in the first morning of the opening Test had rocked the hosts. "Watching Virat Kohli excluding Shikhar Dhawan for just one Test failure, and Bhuvneshwar for no reason at all, Kohli should drop himself in the third Test at Centurion, if he fails to perform in Centurion," Sehwag told 'India TV'. The other change was wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who was ruled out due to a strain, and Parthiv Patel was included is his place. "Excluding Bhuvneshwar wasn't the right decision. Citing that Ishant might benefit with his ...
