Budapest to host 2023 World Athletics Championships

The Hungarian capital of Budapest will host the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the IAAF announced Tuesday. The next worlds will take place in Doha in 2019 before going to Eugene, United States, in 2021. It will be the first time Budapest has hosted the worlds, having previously hosted the 1998 European championships. The city was the sole candidate under a new IAAF system that saw away with traditional bidding campaigns in favour of a consultation process. Budapest expressed its interest in hosting the 2023 worlds after its candidacy for the 2024 Summer Olympics collapsed early last year.

Australia seals quarterfinals berth after China hold Ireland 1-1 in WC

Two-time champions Australia firmly remained on course for a hat-trick of titles by becoming the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the men's hockey World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over England in a Pool B match here. World number 1 Australia scored three goals in the final quarter to register their second consecutive win in Pool B at the Kalinga Stadium. Defending champions Minerva Punjab FC defeated East Bengal 1-0 to get back to title reckoning with their third win of the I-League season here on Tuesday. Injuries force Belgium, Canada to makes one change each in WC squads

Olympic silver medallist Belgium and Canada were on Tuesday forced to make a change each in their squads due to injuries at the ongoing men's hockey World Cup here. Belgium's Emmanuel Stockbroek has been withdrawn from the squad due to a hamstring injury sustained in his side's 2-2 draw against India on Sunday. Afghan president orders probe into abuse of female athletes

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday ordered an investigation after the Guardian reported that members of the national women's soccer team were sexually and physically abused by men from the country's football federation. The report in the British newspaper on Friday cited senior figures associated with the team as saying the abuse took place at the federation's headquarters in Kabul and at a training camp in Jordan last February. The Guardian also cited Khalida Popal, a former head of women's soccer in the Afghanistan Football Federation who was forced to flee the country in 2016 and seek asylum in Denmark, as saying that her own investigation uncovered physical and sexual abuse, death threats and rape. IAAF maintains Russia's athletics ban

The governing body of world athletics on Tuesday maintained Russia's ban from track and field over mass state-backed doping, citing two conditions before the powerhouse can return to international competition. Rune Andersen, head of the IAAF's taskforce on Russia, said Russian authorities, in the form of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), had to grant access to data from testing of samples at a Moscow laboratory from 2011 to 2015 and also pay the IAAF's costs. Access to the samples would hand the Athletics Integrity Unit, the independent body that manages all doping and non-doping integrity-related matters in athletics, the opportunity to determine whether any suspicious findings should be investigated.
