Vieira strikes late in ATK's 1-0 win over Pune

Former champions ATK rode on a late strike from Gerson Vieira to hand bottom-placed FC Pune City a 1-0 defeat in an Indian Super League clash at the Saltlake Stadium here Saturday. Brazilian defender Vieira scored the winner in the 82nd minute to hand the Stallions their fifth loss from seven matches. ATK's persistence was finally rewarded when captain Manuel Lanzarote found Jayesh Rane with space down the right with a lovely backheel. The substitute's cross into the six-yard box was met with a glancing header by Vieira who came sprinting from the midfield to send the ball into the bottom left post. ATK thus returned to winning ways after a defeat to Bengaluru FC in the last match. They climbed to sixth spot with 10 points from seven games. Pune, with just two points from seven matches, will be wondering if there is a way for them to stay afloat in the competition. Leicester fall silent in honour of late Thai owner Vichai

Leicester City fans fell silent on Saturday in a heartfelt tribute to late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha before the first home match since he was killed in a helicopter crash two weeks ago. A special "Tribute to Khun Vichai" video was shown on big screens before kick-off against Burnley, two weeks after the tragedy, which took place moments after the helicopter had taken off from the pitch at the King Power Stadium. A huge banner was unfurled reading: "Khun Vichai, Forever in our Hearts." Then the entire stadium fell silent, with fans turning the stands into a sea of white, holding aloft special scarves in memory of their late chairman and to remember servicemen and women killed in wars on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. PKL: Patna Pirates defeat Bengal Warriors

Patna Pirates proved too strong for Bengal Warriors and romped to a 50-30 win in an enthralling Pro Kabaddi League match here on Saturday. The Patna team, which was more effective in both raids and defence, inflicted an all-out, their first in the game, to extend their lead to 16-8, with six minutes remaining for the end of the first half at the NSCI complex in Worli. Such was Patnas dominance that they inflicted three all-outs in the game to come out triumphant. It was a bad day in office for Bengal Warriors as they slumped to their third defeat in nine games. For Patna, Deepak Narwal (13 points) emerged hero and was ably supported by 21-year-old captain Pardeep Narwal (11 points) and Jaideep (5 points). French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday laid a wreath and unveiled a ceremonial plaque at a war memorial in eastern France where the armistice was signed ending World War I. In a highly symbolic ceremony, Macron and Merkel met in a forest clearing near Compiegne, where Germany officially surrendered at dawn on November 11, 1918, bringing to a close more than four years of slaughter on the Western front.

Speed chess superstar Hikaru Nakamura of United States stamped his class with three wins on the trot to jump to joint lead with Levon Aronian on the penultimate day of the Tata Steel India 2018 rapid tournament here Saturday.
