Uncapped Maqsood retained, Amir ignored in Pak squad for T20Is against NZ

Senior left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir failed to make the cut but an uncapped Waqas Maqsood was retained in Pakistan's Twenty20 squad for the series against New Zealand starting Wednesday in the UAE. Maqsood was earlier part of the Pakistan A side that played the New Zealand A in the UAE last month. This was followed by his selection in the senior outfit but he didn't get a chance to play against Australia. Besides Maqsood there were no other surprises apart from left-arm pacer Amir again failing to win the selectors' confidence. He was ignored for the just-concluded series against Australia which Pakistan won. The 26-year-old Amir has been out of form for the past few months after playing nearly non-stop since the end of his ban for spot-fixing in 2016. Australia went home winless from the recent series, losing the two-Test rubber 0-1 and going down 0-3 in the T20 series. The first match of the T20I series against New Zealand will be played on October 31 in Abu Dhabi. The remaining two .

Lopetegui gambled everything and lost the lot after being sacked by Real Madrid

Julen Lopetegui's brief and inglorious reign as Real Madrid coach lasted just 139 days after the club confirmed he had been sacked. Lopetegui was dismissed on Monday following a meeting of the board of directors, who concluded there had been a "great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid...and the results obtained to date". Santiago Solari, the club's B team coach, has been put in temporary charge and is now expected to lead Real for their Copa del Rey game against minnows Melilla on Wednesday. The Argentinian could also remain in post for Saturday's La Liga match at home to Real Valladolid. Lopetegui's last game proved a humiliation as Madrid were hammered 5-1 by rivals Barcelona in the Clasico on Sunday. The defeat was their fifth in seven games and, seemingly, convinced president Florentino Perez that change was required. "This decision, adopted from the highest level of responsibility, aims to change the dynamics of the first team, when all the objectives ..

Ranieri 'shaken' by death of Leicester's Thai boss

Claudio Ranieri revealed on Monday he had been "terribly shaken" by the death of Leicester City boss Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Ranieri, 66, was hired by Vichai in 2015 and led Leicester to their historic Premier League title success the following year. Billionaire Vichai, 60, died along with four others when his helicopter plummeted into a car park outside the King Power stadium shortly after his side's 1-1 draw with West Ham on Saturday. "I was terribly shaken by the news," Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia in his first public reaction since the tragedy. "He was a good man and always had a positive word for everyone. His positivity and ability to make everybody love him was clear for all to see. He came into the locker room only to dispense kind words, never to reproach you. "One time soon after my birthday, he arrived in the locker room with a huge cake and made everyone sing 'Happy Birthday.' "He was an illuminated man and everything he touched became better." Ranieri said it was now ..

Roger Federer is poised to seek his 100th ATP title at the Paris Masters this week with organisers announcing the Swiss great "arrives" on Tuesday. If the holder of 20 Grand Slam titles lines up at Bercy it will be his first appearance at the last Masters event of the season since 2015. The 37-year-old Swiss star won his 99th career title at the weekend in Basel but hasn't played in Paris in three years due to injury and selective scheduling. Federer "arrives tomorrow" organisers tweeted on Monday. He faces either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Milos Raonic on Wednesday. City win pitch battle as Mahrez sinks Spurs

Pep Guardiola claimed Manchester City's 1-0 win over Tottenham was extra special because of the problems posed by Wembley's damaged pitch. Playing on the scarred Wembley turf just 24 hours after it was torn up by an NFL fixture, City's peerless quality and a predatory finish from Riyad Mahrez helped them win the pitch battle. A sixth victory from their last seven league games lifted Guardiola's unbeaten side back above Liverpool on goal difference. And the City manager admitted he was relieved to see his players cope with the treacherous conditions. "It was a great victory in special conditions, against one of the most physical teams in Europe," he said. "It was not football conditions to play. We reacted well. For our players and the players of Tottenham, hopefully they will sort the problem for the future. "It's a question for the Premier League and Tottenham. We were invited to come here today for the fixture hopefully they can solve that problem." Guardiola hailed City's Champions

Fourth ODI: India crush Windies by 224 runs

India registered a dominating 224-run victory over West Indies as the hosts bowled out the visiting side at a mere score of 153 in the fourth one-day international (ODI) of the ongoing five-match series here at Brabourne Stadium on Monday. The win came as a befitting reply to the Caribbean side, who had, in the third match, stunned the hosts by 43 runs. Young fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed spearheaded the Indian bowling attack in the match as he scalped three wickets to crumble the not-so-stable West Indies batting order.Chasing a mammoth target of 378 runs, the Caribbean side lost an early wicket in the form of their opener Chandrapaul Hemraj who fell to an outgoing delivery from Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. We didn't do justice to our potential, says Holder after loss in 4th ODI

West Indies captain Jason Holder said his team didn't do justice to their potential in the fourth and penultimate ODI here on Monday but expressed optimism of bouncing back in the series decider. "We definitely didn't play well. The way we started the series and the way we have played so far, we certainly didn't do any justice today," Holder said after West Indies slumped to a massive 224-run defeat against India to trail 1-2 in the series. "We conceded too many runs. I felt it was a very good wicket. It was a wicket where once you get in, you can go really big. Unfortunately none of our batters just really gave themselves a chance to bat deep into the innings." Rohit Sharma led the way for India with a whirlwind 162 while Ambati Rayudu played the ideal foil with a 100-run knock as the two put on 211-runs for the third wicket to propel the hosts to an imposing 377 for 5. Chasing the huge total, West Indies were bowled out for 153 with rookie left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed grabbing 3 ...

Kerala rally to hold Jamshedpur in tale of two halves

Australian great Tim Cahill opened his goal account in the Hero Indian Super League but that was not enough to prevent Kerala Blasters from holding Jamshedpur FC to a 2-2 here Monday. It was all Jamshedpur in the first half as star forward Cahill (3') and Michael Soosairaj (31') put them two goals ahead at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. However, a spirited comeback from the visitors saw Slavisla Stojanovic (71') and CK Vineeth (85') restore parity and claim a share of the spoils. Jamshedpur FC have now played four successive draws while Kerala themselves have drawn three matches. Both teams are yet to suffer defeat. The home team got off to a perfect start with a goal as early as the third minute from a corner kick. Sergio Cidoncha's delivery was headed in by a diving Cahill to register his first ISL goal. High on confidence after the early goal, Jamshedpur assumed control of the match and were able to string passes almost at will. The visitors struggled to impose themselves and ...

India's Rohit Sharma Monday said the 81-ball 100 by Ambati Rayudu will remove any doubts that he is the ideal number four in the run-up to next year's World Cup in England.
