ProClime, a unified service provider in the climate space across Singapore, Sri Lanka, and India has committed Rs 450 crore investment in Tamil Nadu for taking up carbon projects, the company said on Friday. The Chennai-headquartered firm signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government during the recently held Global Investors Meet. "Over the next five years, ProClime will invest Rs 450 crore as climate investments in the state and aims to create employment opportunities through carbon projects. US-based First Solar said it has invested USD 700 million in setting up India's first integrated solar manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu that was inaugurated on Thursday. The facility, which has an annual capacity of 3.3 gigawatts (GW), is located in Tamil Nadu. It will produce the 'company's series 7' Photovoltaic (PV) solar modules for the Indian market. The facility has provided a direct employment opportunity to around 1,000 people, according to a statement. Sunsure Energy has pledged an investment of Rs 3,150 crore in renewable energy projects in Tamil Nadu in the next three years. As part of the memorandum of understanding with the state government, it will set up four renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 500 Megawatt (MW), the company said in a statement on Monday. "Sunsure Energy signs MoU with Tamil Nadu for Rs 3,150 crore investment in the state's renewable energy capacity over the next 3 years. The agreement is aimed at bolstering Tamil Nadu's renewable energy capacity through four greenfield projects with a combined capacity of 500 MW," it said. The projects will be set up at various locations, including Tuticorin & Tirunelveli, Theni, and Tiruchirappalli, the company said. Investments of over Rs 6 lakh crore in Tamil Nadu have been promised by various companies during the Global Investors Meet 2024 organised by the DMK government in the state, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Monday. Participating in the valedictory session of GIM 2024, the chief minister said companies have committed to investing a total of Rs 6,64,180 in Tamil Nadu and added that it would create as many as 26,90,657 lakh direct and indirect jobs in the state. Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Monday said it will invest Rs 6,180 crore on various initiatives, including establishing a hydrogen resource centre, in Tamil Nadu. Ammonia gas leaked from a fertiliser manufacturing unit at Ennore in north Chennai and several people have been hospitalised, official sources said here on Wednesday. The incident occurred by 11.45 pm on Tuesday, following which over 25 people in the neighbourhood of the manufacturing facility experienced unease and they were taken to nearby hospitals, sources added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday ordered cash assistance ranging between Rs 7,500 and Rs 12,500 to 9,001 families affected by the oil spill in north Chennai areas. Also, Stalin directed authorities to disburse Rs 10,000 to each of the 787 affected boats. Due to cyclone Michaung triggered rains and resultant floods here early this month, oil spillage surfaced in Kosasthalai river/the Ennore creek. As many as 31 people have lost their lives in the four districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rainfall, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. The Centre has already released Rs 900 crore funds in two installments to be used in this financial year to Tamil Nadu, she said, addressing mediapersons here. Sitharaman said the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai has ultra-modern equipment including three dopplers and had forecast on December 12 itself that there would be heavy rainfall in the four districts - Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin on December 17.
