After a New York Times report claimed that Facebook allowed about 60 device makers, including Apple and Samsung, to access personal information of users and their friends, the social network has defended the pacts saying that these partnerships do not raise privacy concerns.
Scientists have developed a skin-like electronic system that is soft, thin, lightweight and can wirelessly activate soft robots through a simple lamination process. The researchers from Seoul National University in South Korea developed an electronic skin (e-skin) pair as a two-part, wireless soft driving system based on fully printable, stretchable hybrid electronics. "Soft robots have great advantages in organically integrating every robot components without rigid boundaries, but current soft robotic designs still rely on rigid components mostly in driving parts," the researchers wrote in the journal Science Robotics. "This e-skin opens a new avenue for soft robotic assembly. It is soft, thin, and light enough for a robot not to be perceptible, but it can activate the robot as a driving skin," they said. One part is the e-skin for input sensing at a human side, and the other for activating soft robots. The e-skins are soft (same material for the target robot body), thin (less than 1
Facebook has formed data-sharing partnerships with 60 device makers, including Apple and Microsoft, giving them access to information of users and even their friends, a media report has claimed, weeks after the social media faced massive backlash for improperly sharing personal data of up to 87 million people. The New York Times yesterday revealed the partnerships, shedding new light on the social media giant's behaviour related to customer data in the wake of a scandal involving the British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. Facebook, which was founded in 2004, has reached data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device makers including Apple, Amazon, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Samsung over the last decade, starting before Facebook apps were widely available on smartphones, company officials were quoted as saying by the report. The deals allowed Facebook to expand its reach and let device makers offer customers popular features of the social network, such as messaging,
Performing chest compressions in time with the beats of the international 90's hit song 'La Macarena' can improve the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), scientists say. Improving the quality of compressions performed during CPR can significantly increase the chance of survival and lead to better health outcomes. Researchers from University of Barcelona and Universitat Autonoma Barcelona in Spain compare the effectiveness of a smartphone metronome application, and a musical mental metronome in the form of the song "La Macarena" at improving the quality of chest compressions. Both the app and the song provide a regular rhythm to help time compressions. The team selected a group of 164 medical students from the University of Barcelona to perform continuous chest compressions on a manikin for two minutes. Subjects either received no guidance (control), were provided with the smartphone app (App group), or were asked to perform compressions to the mental beat of the song "La ..

Amid stand-off with iPhone maker Apple, Trai has inserted a clause in its proposed regulation on pesky calls, which will make it compulsory for all devices to provide access to call logs and SMSes required for the functioning of 'do-not-disturb' kind of mobile apps. "Every access provider shall ensure that all devices registered on its network shall support all permissions required for the functioning of such apps as prescribed in the Regulations 6 (2) (e) and regulations 24 (2)," Trai said in a corrigendum to draft rules on May 30. The clause 6 of the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation, 2018 is about arrangements that telecom operators should make to facilitate registration of complaints, change in choice of subscribers, mode of filing complaints or registration required to bar pesky calls and SMSes. To file complaints against pesky calls and SMSes, subscribers are required to share phone number, time, date and the purpose for which they received ...
Scientists have identified traces of of multiple metals, along with possible signs of water, in one of the least dense exoplanets ever found. The team, from the University of Cambridge in the UK and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Spain used the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) to observe WASP-127b, a giant gaseous planet with partly clear skies and strong signatures of metals in its atmosphere. WASP-127b has a radius 1.4 times larger than Jupiter but has only 20 per cent of its mass. Such a planet has no analogue in our solar system and is rare even within the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date. It takes just over four days to orbit its parent star and its surface temperature is around 1127 degree Celsius. The observations of WASP-127b reveal the presence of a large concentration of alkali metals in its atmosphere, allowing simultaneous detections of sodium, potassium and lithium for the first time in an exoplanet. The sodium and potassium absorptions are very

The Telangana State Technology Services (TSTS), a state government-owned company, has developed a unique system through which attendance in schools and others can be monitored on a real-time basis. As per the system, devices like swiping machines are installed in schools or offices and a four-digit Aadhar number and biometrics are captured, a senior official of TSTS told PTI. The devices are equipped with net connectivity and once the four-digit Aadhar number and biometrics are entered, they (devices) communicate with servers and a (authentication) response comes back in about less than four seconds, he said. The attendance data can be accessed on dashboards at multiple levels -- by the Head Master of the school or institution, the district-level education officer (for his area) and the Head of department in Hyderabad (across the state), he said. The dashboard is either on a PC or a laptop, he said. "Real time. Every minute you will see how many have cleared the ...
On a lazy afternoon not so long ago, Anustup Roy Barman decided to try his luck at playing a contest while watching a matinee show on HBO, and ended up winning an Apple iPhone 8. The contest required a participant to go on the channel's Facebook page and answer six questions related to the film Barman was watching. It was tantalising, notwithstanding the concerns over data theft and intrusions on private space on social media sites. "It read that if I could answer all six questions correctly and post a screenshot of it, I would be eligible for an iPhone 8 (one grand prize) or some other prizes (10 more winners)," Barman said. "Participating in the contest seemed funny but I went ahead out of curiosity. After a month, I saw a comment under that post asking for my address details, said the Kolkata-based 24-year-old. After a few days came a courier containing the prized phone. That contests are merely publicity stunts for brands is common perception, but the recent data leak controversy .
In a world-first, scientists have drawn inspiration from birds to design an aerial robot capable of altering its profile during flight. To reduce its wingspan and navigate through tight spaces, the robot can reorient its arms, which are equipped with propellers that let it fly like a helicopter. The technology, described in the journal Soft Robotics, paves the way for a new generation of large robots that can move through narrow passages, making them ideal for exploration as well as search and rescue missions. Birds and winged insects have the remarkable ability to manoeuvre quickly during flight to clear obstacles. Such extreme agility is necessary to navigate through cramped spaces and crowded environments, like forests. There are already miniature flying machines that can roll, pitch, or otherwise alter their flight attitude to pass through small apertures. However, birds illustrate another strategy that is just as effective for flying through bottlenecks. They can quickly fold ...
Advanced technologies like AI will spawn new jobs and fears around job losses are misplaced, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said, while admitting that India Inc needs to play a larger role in the efforts to upskill people. "Remember, technology by its very nature requires skilling and I see potential for digital skilling in a big way which, by itself, will create a lot of jobs," Prasad told PTI. He said IT ministry is working with other departments like Niti Aayog on various aspects of these advanced technologies, and is also engaged with software body Nasscom on skill development initiatives. "We are working with Nasscom...Also, I have already set up several committees to examine the whole matter. Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be used for governance...for improvement. We are working quite closely with other departments like Niti Aayog," he explained. Asked if the corporate India needed to put more efforts in this area, the minister said: "There is a scope for that. Nasscom
