Arbitrary ban on social media platforms will impede FDI: IAMAI

Any "arbitrary" ban on social media platforms and intermediaries could impede foreign direct investment and affect expansion of the digital India initiative, an industry body of Internet and mobile device companies said Saturday. Without naming Chinese video sharing app TikTok, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) said its statement was in response to the "recent ban by the MeiTY on the order of a High Court of a social media platform". The Madras High Court on April 3, 2019, had directed the Centre to ban TikTok, saying it was evident from media reports that pornography and inappropriate content were made available through such mobile applications. Soon after, tech giants Google and Apple removed TikTok from their app stores in India to prohibit further downloads of the application. Owned by Chinese firm Bytedance, TikTok is a short-video app that has over 120 million users in India and is popular among youngsters. The IAMAI said it would be a major roadblock to the ..

School students gain insight into research work at IIT Delhi

An autonomous robot navigation system, intelligent vehicle monitoring system, smart bins, destination finder for public transport and smart cushion-cum-mattress are among various projects developed by students of Indian Institute of Technology here. A total of 60 projects were on display on the IIT campus during the institute's "Open Day". "The projects range from agriculture to security, from healthcare to atmospheric sciences. It is important to expose children to some of these research activities early on. They may not understand everything, but they will have lifelong memories of what they see or hear during their day-long interactions and visits to the research labs. Sometimes, it is these small triggers or casual interactions that shape one's future," IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao said at a press conference. The one-day event provided an insight into path-breaking research work, new initiatives, student projects and advanced facilities and laboratories at IIT Delhi. "This ...

This technique 'could turn boiling water into ice without any energy'

Physicists have developed a simple cooling device, which does not require an external power supply to function, according to a recent study. The study was published in the Journal of the 'Science Advances, 2019'If you put a teapot of boiling water on the kitchen table, it will gradually cool down. However, its temperature is not expected to fall below that of the table. Heat can flow by itself only from a warmer to a colder object, and not the other way round. The researchers managed to cool down a nine-gram piece of copper from over 100degC to significantly below room temperature without an external power supply."Theoretically, this experimental device could turn boiling water to ice, without using any energy," said Schilling, lead researcher. To achieve this, the researchers used a Peltier element, a component commonly used to cool down minibars in hotel rooms. These elements can transform electric currents into temperature differences. In this scenario, heat also temporarily flows from

Amazon to ask its delivery drivers to take selfies

Clicking selfies has always been in trend to capture any special moments. But who would have thought that this trend could actually get incorporated by a leading e-commerce company for their smooth business functioning?According to the reports by The Verge, Amazon is now asking its delivery drivers to take selfies, in a bid to reduce fraud. Using facial recognition, the company will verify drivers' identities to make sure they are who they say they are. The new alterations appeared on the Amazon Flex app to drivers, notifying them that they require clicking a selfie before continuing work. Of course, Amazon warns drivers to "not take a selfie while driving."By urging its drivers to take selfies, Amazon could help in preventing multiple people from sharing the same account. The initiative could highlight anyone who is technically unauthorized from delivering packages, such as criminals who are attempting to use Amazon Flex as an excuse to skulk in front of people's homes.
